Description

When Ferrari was considering the design for the successor of the successful Dino 246 GT, once again they requested Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina to propose a design. He created a timeless and beautiful design, containing many of the classic Ferrari details from the beginning of the 60s. To many people this is one of the most beautiful designs of Ferrari. We all remember the TV Series “Magnum” where Tom Selleck acts as Private Investigator with a keen eye for girls as well as cars.

The chassis and body production were entrusted to the skilled people at Scaglietti. At the introduction in 1975 all bodies were made in fiberglass (Vetroresina). This material, however, proved unable to cope with the twisting forces under tough driving, and from 1977 all bodies were produced using traditional steel. The engine was a newly developed, transversally mounted 3 liter V8, inspired by the well proved Dino engine. The capacity of this engine could not be increased sufficiently and the solution was to add 2 more cylinders. This engine is a masterpiece itself and a tour de force in technical solutions, which only Italian engine engineers are able to create. With 4 overhead beltdriven camshafts, 4 double Weber carburetors, dry sump engine lubrication, oversquare pistons and all fully made in aluminum, the engine – not surprisingly – turned out to be a delicious and sonorous sounding one in the best Ferrari tradition. Early European versions produced a full 255 bhp. Further development got lost of the dry sump lubrication, which was replaced by a more conventional wet sump solution.

The 308 GTB and GTS proved to be a huge success for Ferrari, and production continued until 1985 (1989 with the 328). Today the early models with the simple body design and full engine effect are regarded as the most beloved and sought after by enthusiasts and collectors.

This example presented here is one of the early European versions with carburetors, presented in a highly original and well maintained condition. Originally delivered to Switzerland and imported to Denmark in 2014 by an enthusiast who has cared for the car ever since. Renowned Ferrari specialist carried out a major mechanical service with exchange of many components, including an upgrade of the ignition and cooling system. Recently seat and door sides got new leather upholstery as well.

It’s always quite extraordinary to get behind the steering wheel of a classic Ferrari. You sit low – and comfortable – in the beautiful leather seat with a view to the classic open shift gate and the beautiful Veglia instruments. The car drives excellent with a direct steering, powerful engine, firm brakes, accompanied by a wonderful sound from the intake of the carburetors. The targa roof is quite simple to operate and is placed neatly behind the seats, so that open air driving can be fully enjoyed including the magnificent sound of the V8 engine as well. All in all, the 308 GTS is quite a versatile GT car just longing for a trip to the Alpes or that winding country road.

The car is priced very reasonable, whether you consider this model a current classic or a future collectible. Being a true original European car from new, it’s the one to have.
