When Ferrari introduced the 250 GTE in the early nineteen sixties something notable happened within the model range of the Maranello manufacturer. For the first time Ferrari presented a car that combined speed and engineering with elegant design while also offering space for four occupants. The 250 GTE 2+2 was introduced in 1960 and became an important extension of the famous 250 series, which played a central role in Ferrari history throughout the nineteen fifties and sixties.
The car was based on the well known platform of the 250 models, combined with a longer wheelbase of 2,600 millimeters. By positioning the engine slightly further forward in the chassis, Ferrari created space for two additional rear seats. The bodywork was designed and built by Pininfarina, which during this period was responsible for many of Ferrari’s most recognizable designs.
Beneath the long hood lies the well known 3.0 liter Colombo V12 designed by Gioacchino Colombo. This lightweight twelve cylinder engine formed the technical foundation of many Ferrari models of the era. In the 250 GTE the engine produced approximately 240 horsepower and was known for its smooth character and distinctive sound. The model name “250” refers to the displacement per cylinder, a naming tradition Ferrari frequently used during that period.
The Ferrari we offer here is a 1962 250 GTE Series I, an example from the first production series of the model. In total only 299 examples of this first generation were built before later series followed. This particular car retains matching numbers.
This Ferrari is presented in the elegant color Grigio Fumo combined with a black leather interior and beautiful red carpets. The color combination suits the character of a classic Ferrari grand touring car from the early nineteen sixties perfectly.
Mechanically the car has recently received extensive attention. At Roelofs Engineering a comprehensive mechanical program was carried out in which approximately two hundred thousand euros was invested in the technical components. The engine, drivetrain and numerous mechanical systems were addressed, resulting in a 250 GTE that is technically in great condition.
When you take your seat behind the wheel you experience exactly what made this Ferrari so appealing in its day. The long hood, the character of the V12 engine and the comfortable grand touring nature create a driving experience that clearly differs from many sports cars of the same period. It is a Ferrari that feels equally at home on long European journeys as it does on relaxed touring drives.
Within Ferrari history the 250 series played a very important role. Models from this series formed a key part of the marque’s lineup during the nineteen fifties and sixties and laid the foundation for later Ferrari generations such as the 275 and the 330.
Today this Ferrari 250 GTE Series I represents a particularly interesting model for enthusiasts of classic Ferraris. The combination of Pininfarina design, the Colombo V12 engine and the recent high level mechanical investment makes this a very attractive example.
