Few post-war sports cars embody the spirit of lightweight competition motoring quite like the Devin D. Created by California SCCA National Champion Bill Devin, the marque became renowned during the late 1950s and early 1960s for producing advanced fiberglass sports cars that combined exceptional performance, elegant styling, and remarkable affordability. Introduced in 1958, the Devin D represented the most refined evolution of Bill Devin’s philosophy. The exceptional example offered here is a rare factory-built 1961 Devin D, originally delivered to Europe through German importer Fa. Hubert Souren KG** **in early 1961. Believed to have first been supplied in Touring specification before later evolving into the more desirable Sport configuration, the car was equipped from the outset with Porsche-derived mechanical components, including its braking system and instrumentation. Surviving documentation includes its late-1960s German Fahrzeugbrief, further confirming its provenance and long-standing European history.
Discovered in Northern Germany during the late 2000s in restoration condition, the car retained many of its important original features despite the absence of its original 1500cc Porsche engine. Acquired by its current owner in 2025, the Devin subsequently underwent a comprehensive no-expense-spared restoration carried out to an exceptionally high standard throughout.
The chassis was completely stripped, sandblasted, restored, and refinished, while the fiberglass body was carefully corrected and repainted in the stunning and period-appropriate Speedster Blue (Code 602) — a color that beautifully accentuates the Devin’s delicate and purposeful lines. Inside, the cockpit was retrimmed in textured tan vinyl inspired by the interiors of the legendary Porsche 550 RS, creating a wonderfully authentic period atmosphere. The cabin further benefits from Porsche 356-derived VDO instrumentation and an extremely desirable VDM WERKS steering wheel, reinforcing the car’s strong connection to Porsche competition heritage.
Mechanically, the car has been comprehensively rebuilt with equal attention to detail. The suspension and braking systems were fully overhauled, upgraded with Koni shock absorbers and finned Porsche 356B brake drums for improved cooling and performance. A new correct-style 6V electrical system was also installed together with a reduced-ratio starter motor to ensure improved usability and reliability.
Power now comes from a carefully restored Porsche Type 616 engine, rebuilt with oversized pistons and cylinders, precision balancing, and calibration work to maximize both responsiveness and durability. Equipped with twin Weber IDF 40 carburetors and a Sebring-style full steel exhaust system, the engine develops approximately 120 horsepower — an impressive figure in a car of such low weight, delivering performance capable of matching many contemporary sports racers of its period.
