Citroën HY Ambulance, Dutch Red Cross: a time capsule on wheels
Some vehicles tell a story. This Citroën HY tells one you rarely encounter today: the story of an originally Dutch-delivered ambulance, built and used for the Dutch Red Cross, which faithfully served throughout its working life — something you can still see and feel today.
An icon with a mission
For decades, the Citroën HY has been one of the most recognisable commercial vehicles in European automotive history. With its distinctive corrugated bodywork, angular lines and practical front-wheel-drive construction, the HY became the vehicle of choice for those who wanted to combine functionality with character. In ambulance specification, this robust van took on an even more meaningful role: transporting people when it mattered most.
This particular HY served as an ambulance for many years and was later carefully preserved in a museum dedicated to ambulance vehicles, a museum which has unfortunately since closed its doors. That period of museum preservation has clearly contributed to the remarkable condition in which the vehicle remains today.
Never restored. And that is exactly what makes it so special
In a world where many classics have been restored, repainted or “improved”, this Citroën HY remains completely original. No restoration, no interventions designed to hide its past — simply a vehicle that, thanks to consistent and careful maintenance, has stood the test of time.
The bodywork is still entirely original and, exceptionally for an HY of this age, completely free from rust — something that has become extremely rare with this model. The interior shows a light and honest patina: every sign of wear tells part of its history, without the vehicle ever having been cosmetically refurbished.
And then there is the smell. When you take a seat inside, there is no scent of new upholstery or fresh paint, but the authentic atmosphere of a vehicle that was already on the road decades ago — a true time machine taking you back to the period when this ambulance was still in active service. Throughout all those years, the vehicle was excellently maintained during its working life, which explains why its underlying condition remains so remarkably sound today.
Museum piece or usable classic
This Citroën HY lends itself to two very different futures. As a museum piece or collector’s item, it deserves a place among the finest surviving examples of Dutch Red Cross heritage: original, untouched and with a history that can be documented.
At the same time, it would be equally fitting for a new owner to put this van back on the road: carefully maintained in its present condition and ready once again to make an impression at events, during classic car tours or wherever it goes.
This is not a vehicle you “restore”. This is a vehicle you preserve — and one that deserves a second life with the attention and appreciation its history commands.
