  • Cadillac - "The standard of the world"

By 1972, Cadillacs place as America's leading luxury car manufacturer was well cemented. In the early days of motoring, Cadillac defined the blueprint for what would be the modern car with the 1915 Cadillac Type 51. Cadillac continued to go from strength to strength, producing V12 and V16 powered automobiles in the 1930s and continuing to lead luxury car sales in the post-war period. They truly were befitting of their slogan "The Standard of the World." In 1949, when a Rolls-Royce came with a Straight Six engine, manual transmission, wind-up windows and manually operated seats, Cadillacs came with V8s, automatic transmissions and were available with electric windows, electric seats, power steering and more.

1953 saw the launch of the legendary Eldorado nameplate, named after the famed City of Gold and chosen in a GM naming competition. At one point, in 1957 through 1960, the Eldorado Brougham was the world's most expensive car. In 1967, following Oldsmobile's extraordinary FWD Toronado in 1966, Cadillac applied the FWD formula to their flagship. In 1971, the Eldorado Convertible was launched again and remained in production through 1976. Bodystyles changed regularly but arguably the best looking model years came in 1971 and 1972.

Our magnificent 1972 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible is a beautiful example of this iconic model, presented in one of the best factory colour combinations of all. Eldorados came standard with special Firemist Metallic paint and this car was beautifully specified in 1972 in Ice Blue Firemist Metallic with Dark Blue leather, by far one of the most elegant factory colour combinations ever offered on these Cadillacs. This car was also notably owned by the original family from new until 2014 when it passed on to family friends. We purchased the car initially for ourselves and used the car for 6 weeks in Los Angeles before shipping the car to the UK. We have had a brand new soft top fitted which improves upon the original with the addition of a glass rear window in place of the standard plastic unit. The car is also fitted with the supremely cool "Parade Boot Cover" which looks far sleeker than the usual hood bag. The brakes have also been serviced in our ownership.

These Cadillacs feel remarkably modern for their time with exceptional power and roadholding. With their front wheel drive they also handle surprisingly well and have more steering feel than most other American cars from the period. They ride as well as any Rolls-Royce and are equally smooth in their power delivery. Equipped with air-conditioning, power windows, power seats and power hood, these Cadillacs were still at the pinnacle of luxury in 72 and what better way to experience this than owning one yourself. Whether you want to cruise up the Pacific Coast Highway or along the Azure Coast, this Cadillac is perfectly suited for the job and just as capable as its much more expensive European counterparts with a style and cool factor all to its own.
