Description

The Bentley T, introduced in 1965, was, like the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, the first Bentley model with a monocoque body. The car featured central hydraulic self-leveling suspension, similar to Citroën's hydropneumatic system, and four disc brakes. It was virtually identical to the Silver Shadow in terms of design and even equipment, and therefore underwent the same model updates.

The vehicles were identical to the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow; Bentley was a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce. The T-Series replaced the Bentley S-Series in 1966. During its production run, the car was known as the Bentley T; after the introduction of the revised T2 series, the first series was retrospectively designated T1 for better differentiation.

Only the radiator grille, wheel trims, and badges served as external distinguishing features. However, the Bentley also featured the double R of the Rolls-Royce brand on the instrument panel, as well as on the engine block and valve cover. The body, also designed by Rolls-Royce, was identical except for a hood adapted to the radiator grille.

The Bentley T1 was the sister model of the renowned Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow I and represented a significant advancement in the luxury automotive industry. It was the answer to Daimler-Benz's newly launched Mercedes 600. A standout feature of the T1 was its monocoque body, which was considerably lighter than its predecessor. This weight reduction, combined with the lighter body, allowed the V8 engine with a displacement of over 6 liters to achieve performance figures typically associated with sports cars. Furthermore, the continuous development of the Bentley T1 guaranteed high safety standards.

The design team in Crewe achieved a true masterpiece in styling the Bentley T1. The designs are now considered prime examples of timeless elegance and are a symbol of luxury and exceptional driving dynamics.

With its combination of advanced technology and distinctive design, the Bentley T1 set new standards in the luxury segment and remains a highly sought-after collector's item.

The Bentley T1 benefited significantly from the modern monocoque construction, which, compared to earlier models, not only offered weight advantages but also improved handling. This marked the first time Bentley consciously approached the driving experience of a sports car – yet always with the understated elegance of a British gentleman's club. Compared to the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, the suspension was tuned slightly firmer.

Exclusivity in numbers

From the outset, the Bentley T1 was positioned as an exclusive alternative to the Silver Shadow. While Rolls-Royce aimed for high production numbers, Bentley maintained its bespoke character. True to its name, only 1,703 vehicles were ever produced.

Our Bentley T Series was ordered and delivered on March 3, 1967, by the Rolls-Royce dealer Rippon Bros Ltd in Huddersfield. It found a new home with its current owner in Germany in March 1985. It is accident-free and rust-free, and the mechanical components have been well-maintained over the years. The chrome, paint, wood, and leather are in excellent condition and have a charming patina. It is roadworthy. Due to the death of the last owner, the Bentley has not been driven for an extended period; therefore, a service is recommended.
