Trade-in car.

A small white Spider, a red leather interior, a relatively low windshield, and an Alfa Romeo engine that is happiest when you let it work a little. This is, in essence, exactly what a classic sports car should be. You look at it and immediately understand what it was built for. Roof down, sunglasses on, and preferably a road without a traffic light every two hundred yards.

In 1954, Alfa Romeo introduced the Giulietta Sprint. The compact coupe was met with immediate enthusiasm and marked the beginning of a new generation of Alfa Romeos: smaller and more accessible than the larger models that came before, yet still equipped with beautifully engineered mechanicals. The Giulietta also played an important role in Alfa Romeo’s development into a manufacturer capable of producing cars on a larger scale. Not long afterward came the Berlina and, of course, the Spider.

The open Giulietta was introduced in 1955 and featured a body by Pinin Farina, as the company’s name was still written at the time. Gian Battista Farina affectionately called her la signorina, the young lady, and the name suits her perfectly. The Spider is elegant and graceful. Yet beneath that friendly bodywork lies remarkably advanced engineering.

Under the hood is a 1,290cc four-cylinder engine with an aluminum block and cylinder head, along with twin overhead camshafts. By modern standards, the output is modest, but then the Giulietta is compact and lightweight.

An American motorcycle magazine once essentially described the Giulietta as a small car capable of carrying two people over almost any kind of road faster than many cars twice its size. Not because of overwhelming power, but because of its handling, compact dimensions, and overall harmony. And that is exactly what this Alfa is all about.

A bend in the road, a short tunnel, and an engine that begins to sound increasingly enthusiastic are usually all it takes. The steering wheel sits close to you, the body is easy to place, and you feel completely immersed in everything the car is doing.

This particular example dates from 1957 and is finished in what may well be one of the finest color combinations for a Giulietta Spider: white bodywork with a red leather interior. The white beautifully highlights the soft curves of the body, while the red interior provides exactly the right amount of contrast. This Giulietta also presents as a particularly authentic car. It has been carefully preserved and still retains its genuine character. It is precisely the beautiful, recognizable details that make the difference here: the simple instruments, the thin-rimmed steering wheel, the small windshield frame, the chrome trim, and the shape of the seats.

Some cars are restored to such perfection that you almost become afraid to drive them. This Spider does the opposite: it invites you in. A 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, finished in white with red leather, retaining an authentic appearance and offering exactly the right level of quality to be genuinely enjoyed. Not a museum piece that can only be admired from a distance, but a small Italian sports car that makes it very clear it would rather be out on the road.
