Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GTC

In September 2017, this Alfa Romeo stood among Europe's finest classics on the lawn of Hampton Court Palace during the Concours of Elegance, entered as number 35 alongside the finest private collections in the country. This was no chance occurrence, for twenty years earlier this same GTC had already taken an award at the Concours Automobiles Classiques et Louis Vuitton in the Parc de Bagatelle in Paris, in the category "Grandes Classiques des Années 20 & 30."

This 6C 1750 Gran Turismo Compressore is built around a 1,752cc inline-six engine, fitted with a supercharger and producing 80 horsepower at 4,400 rpm, at a compression ratio of just 5.0:1, a necessity given the forced induction. Factory figures record a top speed of approximately 90 mph, some 145 km/h, and a dry weight of 1,360 kilograms. The chassis, suspension, steering, brakes, and gearbox are nearly identical to those of the larger, eight-cylinder 8C, and the beautifully proportioned engine likewise betrays that kinship. The coachwork is the work of Carrozzeria Touring, specialists in precisely this type of drophead body; the upright radiator lends the GTC Coupé Royal a stately presence that all but conceals the true capabilities of the two-valve, double-overhead-camshaft engine. Inside awaits a refined four-seat cabin, with polished woodwork and cream-coloured leather, a world removed from the racing 6C 1750s that in period won the Mille Miglia, the Ulster TT, and the Brooklands Double Twelve.

The car is officially recognised by the Registro Storico of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club and additionally holds "eligible" status with the Registro 1000 Miglia, two certifications not granted to every example and which underscore the authenticity of chassis and engine; a FIVA identity card confirms that standing internationally as well. The car carried the British registration KXO 590 for many years and, after a period of Italian ownership, was thoroughly restored. The bodywork was undertaken by Carrozzeria Nova Rinascente under Dino Cognolato, while the engine rebuild was carried out by Officina Il Restauro under Gianni Torelli, complete with a new block, pistons, valves, bearings, and connecting rods, all documented by invoice.

The result of that restoration remains clearly evident today: paintwork and bodywork present in excellent condition, and the interior, with its wooden dashboard and upholstery, likewise looks particularly fine. From England, the car later made the crossing to the United States, before finding its way back to Europe. In the Netherlands, it underwent extensive inspection and preparation for RDW approval in early 2021, including a replaced dynamo, corrected steering play, an overhauled fuel system and ignition, restored electrical contacts, and adjusted brakes. The car has carried Dutch registration ever since and is fully roadworthy here. The car comes with an extensive documentation file: the original parts book, historical Alfa Romeo factory brochures in French and English, magazine articles covering this specific chassis, restoration invoices, the 2017 Concours of Elegance programme, the Registro Storico and 1000 Miglia plaques, the FIVA card, and various spare parts, including a Memini carburettor conversion kit and an original distributor with ignition coil.

Here, then, stands a 6C 1750 GTC with an exceptionally well-documented, international history, passing from Italian collectors through British and American hands, with concours success on two continents and official Registro Storico certification, FIVA identity, and Mille Miglia eligibility crowning a car that, in the words of a previous owner, is "a brilliant all-round road car." Built in the early 1930s, this GTC falls comfortably within the period recognised for eligibility by the modern Mille Miglia, and with its already-confirmed "eligible" status from the Registro 1000 Miglia, this car stands ready to start in this legendary regularity rally today.
