In 1935/36, the original TT Sprite was a racing car specifically built to compete in the Ulster TT, held annually on the Isle of Man, which is still famous for the thrilling motorcycle races on the same street circuit. The original Riley TT Sprite was based on a chassis similar to the 12/4 and equipped with the same 1,496 cc four-cylinder engine.
This Riley 12/4, chassis 22T1331, is a carefully crafted Riley TT Sprite replica that even the most discerning Riley enthusiasts will appreciate. The original 12/4 (9HP) chassis left the Riley factory fitted with a ‘Falcon’ sedan body. The car spent much of its life with various owners in Devon, UK. In November 1978, it was purchased by the Dutch classic car museum and dealer ‘Automuseum Bergeyk’ and exported to the Netherlands via Felixstowe customs. In the late 1990s, plans were made to create a Riley TT Sprite Special based on the 12/4 chassis.
Technical drawings were prepared for the body and chassis, including detailed plans for the dashboard, special suspension, gear lever, headlamp and fender brackets, and other unique components found on the racing car. The technical and design work was carried out by Dutchman Kees de Cock (chassis and mechanical components) and Englishman John Pitney (bodywork). The actual construction was carried out by Mr. J. Lensveld.
The file includes a complete photographic record of the build, starting with the blue ‘Falcon’ sedan, featuring images of all the people involved, the construction of wooden molds for the aluminum body, the fabrication of the bodywork, and the completion of the chassis and engine. With perfection in mind, the build took many years. The engine was built and tuned to the TT Sprite race specifications, and the gearbox is a robust, rare, original Riley ‘preselector’ unit.
The car was sold to a Dutch collector and registered for road use in April 2011. From that point, it was maintained by Classic Job. The current owner has cherished this Riley TT Sprite replica since July 2021.
This car is exceptional, not just for Riley enthusiasts, and is equally enjoyable on the road as well as in regularity rallies and touring events. With modifications to comply with current FIA regulations, the car can even be used in national and international historic races (for example, through the Dutch Vintage Sports Car Club in the Netherlands). The car is in excellent condition and drives impressively.
