British Luxury with Character – The 1990 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign 4.0
With the introduction of the XJ40 in 1986, Jaguar ushered in a new era for its distinguished line of luxury saloons. The XJ40 was the first completely new XJ generation in almost two decades, combining Jaguar's traditional virtues with modern engineering. Its more angular bodywork represented a deliberate step towards the future while preserving the marque's characteristic elegance and commitment to luxury. Today, the XJ40 is regarded as one of the most significant models in Jaguar's history and the last Jaguar developed largely under the influence of traditional British engineering.
The later models equipped with the 4.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine are particularly highly regarded. This refined powerplant is renowned for its exceptional smoothness, generous torque and outstanding long-distance touring ability. Combined with a comfort-oriented suspension setup and a silky-smooth automatic transmission, it created a luxury saloon that continues to impress with its effortless composure and remarkable ride quality decades after its introduction. The Sovereign specification represented the pinnacle of the range, offering sumptuous leather upholstery, fine wood veneers and an extensive list of luxury appointments.
The example offered here is finished in the elegant original colour Regency Red, beautifully complemented by a brown leather interior. Together with the distinctive Teardrop alloy wheels, the classic colour combination perfectly accentuates the elegant lines of the XJ40. The harmonious presentation lends the car the understated British sophistication for which Jaguar has long been admired throughout the world.
Showing just over 203,000 kilometres, this Jaguar presents in remarkably well-preserved original condition—particularly impressive given its mileage. A glance at the exceptionally well-maintained interior immediately reflects the careful use and conscientious ownership the car has enjoyed throughout its life. The XJ6 remained with its original owner until 1995 before passing to another member of the same family, a history that has undoubtedly contributed to its outstanding state of preservation. Its fully traceable provenance and respectful ownership lend this example an especially authentic character.
Originally supplied by Emil Frey in Switzerland, the Jaguar benefits from a fascinating and fully documented Swiss history. A recent workshop inspection identified the need for repairs to the rear shock absorbers and the braking system. In addition, the installation of two new tyres and a new battery is recommended. For this reason, the vehicle is offered without reserve (No Reserve), presenting enthusiasts of classic Jaguars with an attractive opportunity to acquire an honest, highly original example requiring only a manageable amount of mechanical recommissioning.
