Descripción

Hilton & Moss are excited to present an outstanding example of the now iconic AVO Mk1 Ford Escort RS2000 in the eye-catching Olympic Blue.

THE MODEL

The now iconic Ford Escort RS2000 was part of special division at Ford that focused on their motorsport success. The mantra being ‘Win on Sunday, sell on Monday’. This required the Rallye Sport Escorts to go through a modification process by hand at their specialised facility within Ford Advanced Vehicle Operations. This meant that the AVO cars had a lot of special features that set them apart from the lesser run of the mill family cars, many of which focused on strengthening the body and mechanicals. They did this by capitalising on the same competition-developed Type 49 heavy duty, 2-door body as the Escort Mexico and RS1600’s. The most obvious of which were the gorgeous flared wheel arches to accommodate the wide sports road wheels and side decals that make this model so distinguishable, especially in the stunning Olympic Blue.

EXTERIOR

What is perhaps most noticeable about this example in particular is just how good the panel gaps and paint finish are. There has evidently been a huge amount of time invested in getting the metal work right during the restoration. This craftsmanship has extended to the underside too, where all the Type 49 body features such as the reinforced front suspension mounting points and chassis side remain clear to see. Whilst the car has been painted to an exceptionally high standard underneath, they have obviously been sensitive enough to leave all the factory welds easily visible. This car has been built to be one of the best, and they have diligently retained lots of hard to find, period correct items such as the FoMoCo lenses and IODE H4 Cibie headlights, with invoices on file show they have restored a lot of the original glass area too.

INTERIOR

The cabin is a fabulous exercise in satisfying simplicity, that is so lost in the cars of today. Featuring the original body hugging, reclining and surprisingly comfortable RS seats, which incredibly are still trimmed in their original Beta Black fabric (Code A1) and are immaculate in appearance with only a tiny mark to the driver’s seat base, only adding to the charm. Both seats benefit from being fitted with the optional and desirable headrests. The perforated black headlining and door cards have no rips or tears and are very well secured throughout. All of this presents superbly throughout with an undamaged padded dash shrouding the correct RS sports instrumentation, which is bright and clear including the 130mph speedometer and 7,000rpm tachometer. All switches and controls function as intended and show little signs of their age.

The immaculate boot area still houses the spare wheel supported at a peculiar angled position with the correct rubber strap, boot mat, jack and wheel brace, all still present. The rare and exceptionally fragile items such as the rear light protectors and boot parcel cover are still in place. Overall, this must be one of the best and most original Ford RS interior’s you could ever wish to see.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This iconic RS2000 has the highly durable and well regarded 2.0 Ford ‘Pinto’ unit, which has had the benefit of a leak down and compression test during our pre-sale inspection. According to the document on file, the engine has been previously setup and dyno tested by HT Racing Ltd, the 100bhp is confirmed to allow a claimed top speed of 110mph and 0-60mph in 9 seconds. The immaculate engine bay is finished to the same exceptionally high standard throughout and has been fitted with the period correct engine bay information stickers. Crucially the original VIN plate and AVO build plate have been retained, which massively help to prove the cars specification when built at Aveley originally. Even though the engine bay has been repainted throughout, the chassis stamp can be clearly seen on the inner wing, with all digits being legible.

The gear changes provided by the factory standard Ford Type-E 4-speed gearbox, has a very pleasant mechanical throw, which is a joy to use, and all gears engage smoothly and simply. The lever itself is perfectly positioned with no obstructions between you and the steering wheel, which makes working your way up and down the box a fabulously engaging experience.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The period correct factory standard spoke-style sport steels measuring 13x5.5 inch are finished in Silver Fox with metallic Pearl Grey, benefitting from genuine RS centre caps. Period style Dunlop SP Aquajet 165 HR13 radial tyres are fitted to all five rims with masses of tread. The dual-circuit brake system with Girling Hydrovac direct vacuum servo mounted on an extended bracket bolted to the bulkhead works perfectly, having been tested as part of our sales inspection.

DOCUMENTATION

This AVO Club registered example rolled off the production line in March 1974 and was supplied by Haynes Bros. Ltd of Maidstone, one of 73 specially appointed Rallye Sport Dealers. Originally Registered new to a Dr. R Edney, the car was delivered to the excited first owner on the 10th May 1974, as shown in the immaculate original Ford Sure service book that makes up just some of the cars outstanding history. From the outset Dr. Edney obviously wanted to do right by the car as he had the car protected by CRYLA-GARD rustproofing, on the very same day he collected it.

The original service book remains in truly incredible condition with 14 service stamps present from July 1974 to September of 1986. Where it had already covered 70,652 miles. Somebody was enjoying the car very much it seems in those first 12 years of life, a testament to what a driver’s car it is.

Incredibly this example has only had five former keepers from new. The comprehensive history file confirms via two staff service invoices that, two further owners worked at Ford RS Dealers, Invicta Motors Ltd of Faversham and Swale Motor Company of Sittingbourne. Even though by 1984 when these staff members owned what was not a valuable car at that time, it was evidently good enough to catch their eye, with the car having been maintained exclusively by Ford until 1986.

At this time, it was sold by Mike Young Garage in Ilford Essex to the fourth owner, Mr. Picknell, where paperwork shows he paid extra for the Ultimate Motorplan breakdown and mechanical Insurance, with the car having covered some 70,952 miles at this point. Obviously sufficiently well maintained to be able to be resold by a dealer with a warranty at the time.

Remaining in Mr. Picknell’s ownership all the way until 2011 when the second to last keeper and highly regarded Ford collector, Mr. Anthony Manning, took ownership of the car and embarked on a concours level restoration in 2017. Given that this restoration is now approaching 10 years of age, it really is a testament to the team that restored the car and the owner who consequently pampered the car, that it remains in truly outstanding condition today.

Supplied with its original service book and handbook in the Haynes of Maidstone A5 wallet, masses of historic invoices and MOT certificates along with AVO Club letters, this really is one of the most exceptional Mk1 Ford Escort RS2000 examples you are ever likely to find.

It really is every bit as good as the pictures and is a great way to remind yourself of just how much fun a light and agile driver’s car can be. With the recent re-release of the Boreham Wood Motor Company’s Ford Escort MK1 Resto Mod which is retailing for hundreds of thousands of pounds, there has been a re-invigorated interest in these iconic cars, and a new audience of buyers who appreciate the simple charms and iconic looks. The demand for cars at this level is only likely to increase.
