Rare 1940 U23 with Documented Military Origin

Offered for sale due to new projects: a rare and fully restored Citroën U23 short wheelbase from 1940, originally delivered to the French Army (first registration: February 1940).

This is a genuine 1940 model, not a later reconstruction.


History & Documentation

  • Delivered new to the French Army (02/1940)
  • Already in civilian use from 1941 (Ets. Sirac, Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule)
  • Full known history, including all registrations (military + civilian)
  • Official dating certificate from Peugeot/Citroën archives (Terreblanche)
  • Extensive documentation available
  • Parts-books, workshop manual and period-correct documentation available.

Restoration

  • Purchased as a dismantled and incomplete project
  • Fully restored from the ground up
  • Restoration documented in a 50-page full-color A4 photo album

Engine & Mechanics

  • Original engine (matching numbers) confirmed by archives for chassis, engine and cabine.
  • 1.9L petrol engine (Perfo MI – “moteur inversé”)
  • Recent work: cylinder liner seals replaced (cooling system issue resolved)

Upgrades for usability:

  • 6V alternator with electronic regulator
  • LED lighting (except headlights)

Configuration & Details

This vehicle retains part of its military features, while restored in a more elegant civilian configuration:

Still present:

  • Toolboxes on running boards
  • Rear “queues de cochon”
  • Central lubrication system (Monocoup), not functioning

Missing 1940/military specific items:

  • Split windshield
  • Flat front fenders
  • Tow hook

➡️ These can be reinstated by a purist if desired.
➡️ Current post-war style fenders give the vehicle a more refined appearance; a matter of personal taste.
