Nel 1971, l'ingegnere capo della Ducati, Fabio Taglioni, progettò il classico motore bialbero a V prima utilizzato nella GT750. Questo si rivelò un immediato successo con la vittoria di Paul Smart nella gara Imola 200 del 1972, dando inizio a una lunga tradizione di bicilindrici a V vincenti che hanno continuato a dominare le corse del Campionato del Mondo Superbike nel corso degli anni.
Il modello 888 lanciato nel 1991 ha vinto il Campionato del Mondo quell'anno e l'anno successivo con il pilota americano Doug Polen.
Le moto fornite ufficialmente vennero messe a disposizione di altri piloti e team selezionati, con Carl Fogarty che concluse al secondo posto nel 1993 e il pilota italiano Mauro Lucchiari al decimo posto con un miglior risultato di secondo nella gara di San Marino.

Questa moto era una delle due fornite al team Grottini da utilizzare nel campionato del 1993 da Mauro Lucchiari.
