Restoring without welding…

Anyone who has ever handled a rusty restoration object knows how much care, time and money is involved before everything is like new again. As a starting point, you should always buy the best car available. This especially applies to the bodywork, because it can require unexpectedly many and expensive repair hours. The owner of this beautiful 1972 Triumph TR6 saw this very well at the time. It was a normally driveable car, but one that required a restoration. This was carried out in the period 2006-2007. The biggest advantages were the flawless body and chassis, which did not require the use of a welding machine. Super unique of course, and entirely due to the conditions the car was in until then, namely the dry climate of California. The fact that the TR6 still looks so beautiful 16 years after restoration says enough about the quality of the restoration, but certainly also about the condition the car was in before it came from America to the Netherlands.

The sleek bodywork is well reflected in the very beautiful and chic looking paint, called Mallard Green, or sometimes also called  Mallard Blue. This is because sometimes both a green and blue tint are visible, depending on how the light falls on it. This special and very rare color makes this TR6 unique in appearance.

The underside also looks great. Just take a look at the photo report. Only a very lightly applied anti-corrosion layer provides adequate protection and all original welding seams and welding points are still clearly visible. That’s how we like to see it. Nothing hidden under greasy tectyl, but just clearly showing the authenticity and to properly determine the condition of the chassis and sheet metal.

The beautiful wooden dashboard plays a leading role in the classic interior. British style, through and through, and finished with chrome accents. A pure pleasure to look out on while sitting behind the, also wooden, Moto Lita steering wheel. And of course there is no visible wear or cracks in the seats and door upholstery or dashboard top. Everything is in beautiful condition.

Technically, the TR6 was of course also extensively overhauled at the time. Originally a gearbox was installed without overdrive, but experts know that this is a very welcome addition. So the owner bought and installed a completely overhauled gearbox with overdrive in England. A wonderful and comfort-enhancing option, because the revs are quickly dropping to around 600 rpm with the overdrive engaged. This provides more comfort at a higher speed and of course also a nicer fuel consumption. All technology works well and nothing needs to be done, partly due to regular maintenance. Naturally, various invoices testify to this.

A few options complete the car, with the mentioned overdrive being an important item, and the 72-spoke chrome spoke rims, luggage rack, wooden Moto Lita steering wheel, tonneau cover, stainless steel exhaust system, K&N air filters, aluminum valve cover, and the adjustable Spax rear shock absorbers, make a nice addition.

Since the restoration, the car has been in the possession of one Dutch owner who, after long doubting whether he wanted to say goodbye to it, asked us to find a new “care taker” for it. This must be someone who can at least match the good care of the previous owner for the TR. The car certainly deserves that.

Finding a new owner should not be difficult, because the condition and appearance of the car is truly unique.
