Beschreibung

Unveiled at the 1963 Turin Motor Show, the Maserati Quattroporte (Tipo AM107) was conceived with a clear mission: to combine the roaring performance of a race-bred Italian Grand Tourer with the luxury and space of a four-door saloon. Powered by a high-revving 4.1-liter quad-cam V8 producing around 260 hp, it claimed the title of the fastest four-door sedan in the world at launch with a top speed exceeding 230 km/h (143 mph). These early pre-1966 examples are by far the most sought-after by collectors; featuring sophisticated De Dion rear suspension rather than a conventional live axle, only around 260 units were produced before the facelift, making them significantly rarer than later models.

Exterior: Having a look at the outside of this Series 1 Maserati Quattroporte, you are faced with one of the most classic color combinations imaginable. The exterior color is called Grigio Milano, which closely resembles what the British would call gunmetal grey. According to the Maserati Classiche Certificate, this is the original factory color for both the exterior and interior.

The car has a lovely, elegant, and understated shape – something that doesn't quite hint at its true performance, as we will touch on later. Condition-wise, the car is excellent. It was properly restored and enjoyed afterwards. Today, it presents as a very honest, rust-free car with a high-quality paint job showing only minor, honest marks from use. The paintwork was completed around 2013, and the brightwork and chrome all around are in very good condition. Being a 1965 model, this is a very rare pre-facelift Series 1 Quattroporte. While the early and late models share many subtle differences, the most obvious visual trait is the single large rectangular headlight lenses, which were replaced on facelifted cars with a quad-headlight setup (a design also seen on US-market pre-facelift cars). This is the Quattroporte in its cleanest, purest form, exactly as designer Pietro Frua intended.

Another subtle yet fascinating feature is the wheel setup. At first glance, they may resemble standard steel wheels, but closer inspection reveals they are rare Borrani bimetallic wheels, featuring an aluminum outer rim riveted to a steel center disc. Wrapping these wheels are fresh, period-correct Pirelli Cinturato tires.

Interior: Inside, the Maserati Quattroporte offers a sublime cabin rich in 1960s Italian charm. What immediately strikes you is the gorgeous cognac brown (Marrone) leather upholstery. Then come the details: the classic wooden steering wheel, the delicate toggle switches in the center console, and the iconic Italian ashtrays also found in other exotics like the Iso Grifo. Everything in the cabin is in lovely condition. Most of the leather throughout the cabin is original, apart from the front seats, which have been tastefully re-upholstered. The upholsterers did an exceptional job selecting the correct leather grain and achieving a seamless color match. Performed a while back, the front seats have since developed a gentle patina that blends perfectly with the rest of the original interior. The seat foam was replaced at the same time, making them exceptionally comfortable. This is a true Grand Tourer, offering spacious rear seating, a large trunk and air conditioning.

Engine and Mechanics: As the car's owner will tell you, the Quattroporte’s best party trick is firing up its 4.1-liter V8. It delivers an incredibly aggressive exhaust note that you simply wouldn't expect from an understated four-door saloon. The car offers impressive power, precise and distinct gear shifts, excellent high-speed cruising ratios, and great high-speed stability.

Being an early pre-facelift example, it features the highly sought-after, race-derived De Dion rear axle, allowing this grand sedan to tackle corners with remarkable composure. Mechanically, the car is thoroughly sorted. Its original, matching-numbers engine was overhauled by a renowned Maserati specialist, receiving new timing chains, bearings, and complete refresh work. Additional work included a new clutch, gearbox reseal, and suspension overhaul. More recently, it was fitted with a modern 123Ignition electronic distributor for improved reliability.

All of this mechanical work is thoroughly documented with accompanying invoices. Since the overhaul, the car has been driven continuously through a proper shakedown period, resulting in a dependable, turnkey driver’s car.

History and Documentation: This Maserati Series 1 Quattroporte was delivered new to Modena, Italy. It eventually made its way to the United States before being imported to Sweden in 1990. Shortly after arriving in Sweden, the car underwent a comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration. It then traded hands twice across two long-term ownerships before being acquired by its current owner in 2011.

Under the current ownership, the car underwent another journey of refinement, receiving additional cosmetic work and thorough mechanical sorting. The car comes with comprehensive documentation detailing all work completed by the current owner, alongside restoration photos from its original 1990s restoration. Furthermore, the car has been featured in several motoring magazines (copies included with the sale), and is accompanied by its official Maserati Classiche Certificate and original delivery notes.
