Description

This example of the legendary Longstroke Norton Manx represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a beautiful, as raced, example of one of the most iconic and successful racing motorcycles.

The long stroke SOHC Norton Manx was a further development of Norton’s long-evolving Camshaft engine, initially introduced in 1930 with the "Carroll" camshaft engine. By the 1950s, the Manx had long been the dominant force in international 350cc and 500cc competition, benefiting from continual development by the Norton Works Racing Department.

The pairing of the Manx engine engine with the revolutionary "Featherbed" duplex cradle frame invented by Rex McCandless in 1949 and introduced for the 1950 model year, kept the Norton Manx competitive and Norton would go on to enjoy countless victorious moments throughout the 1950s with the Norton Manx of privateers and factory supported riders.

This beautifully patinated Norton Manx consists of a Genuine Manx Featherbed rolling chassis fitted with an early Longstroke SOHC Manx engine with big fin alloy head.

The Featherbed frame is an original Manx Featherbed oil-in-frame. An original Manx 'Elephants Foot' oil tank and short circuit alloy petrol tank is mounted together with a high-level exhaust. The paint on the short circuit alloy petrol tank is believed to be original.

Original Manx conical hubs in magnesium front and back are laced to alloy rims. A Lucas racing magneto, rubber-mounted Smiths tachometer and full race fairing from the BeeBee racing staple complete the package.

It is not known if the Manx was previously part of the BeeBee Racing staples, further research will no doubt reveal more history. All parts are genuine Norton Manx and the bike is an authentic example of a 1950s Longstroke Norton Manx.

The Manx was build by an enthusiast for parading and has never been raced in anger. The previous owner had the Manx on display in his workshop, starting it every now and then to keep all running parts lubricated.

This is a beautiful and potent Longstroke Norton Manx that is perfect for track or display. It will require light recommissioning before running again and is an ideal acquisition for collectors or historic racing enthusiasts.
