This is the 1972 Volvo P1800 ES, a car that shows in its own distinctive way how Volvo pushed its boundaries in the 1960s and 1970s. To properly understand this model, we need to go back to 1960. At that time, Volvo was mainly known for durability, safety, and restrained design. But with the introduction of the P1800, the brand wanted to show that it also understood emotion and design. The result? A strikingly elegant sports coupé that quickly became world-famous, in part thanks to the television series The Saint, in which Roger Moore drove one. That car suddenly gave Volvo a very different image: stylish, sporty, and international.

By the end of the 1960s, however, the coupé’s design began to feel somewhat dated. Instead of replacing the model outright, Volvo chose a clever evolution. In 1971, the P1800 ES was introduced, a completely new interpretation of the same concept. No longer a traditional coupé, but something of a shooting brake—a combination of sports car and practical wagon.

The most distinctive feature is the glass tailgate. At the time, this was a bold design choice and gave the Volvo a highly recognizable silhouette. At the same time, it created additional space and usability, making the car far more practical for everyday use.

Underneath, the engineering remained familiar and reliable. The P1800 ES was fitted with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with fuel injection, producing around 130 horsepower. This made the car not only comfortable, but also lively enough to feel genuinely sporty. The combination of rear-wheel drive, balanced handling, and solid build quality ensures that this car still drives very well today.

This particular example is finished in Alpine Blue, a color that suits the lines of this Volvo beautifully. Combined with a black leather interior, it creates a timeless appearance that feels both classic and fresh. Inside, the overall condition is very well kept. The seats have been reupholstered in fine leather, and everything feels neat and properly maintained.

What makes this P1800 ES especially interesting is that it is equipped with electric power steering. This provides a light and comfortable driving experience without taking away from the car’s character. It remains a classic Volvo, but one that is surprisingly easy to drive.

There are also several details that complete the package. The yellow Marchal fog lights at the front give the car a subtle, sporty look. In the luggage area, you will find details such as leather straps. Please also refer to the photos on our website.

The P1800 ES was produced for only about two years, and with relatively low production numbers, the model has become one of the most sought-after classic Volvos today. Not only because of its rarity, but above all because of its unique character.

What you see here is a car that sits perfectly between two worlds. Sporty, yet practical. Elegant, but never overdone. And perhaps best of all: it is a car you can actually use, while still offering something special every time you look at it.
