In 1956 Volvo went in a totally new direction with the introduction of the Amazon, a very nicely sculpted saloon, available either as a 2 or 4-door car. Add good handling and very good reliability into the mix together with Volvo’s legendary quest for safety and you have a great car. The Amazon was the first car fitted with seatbelts as standard. The three-point safety belt was also a first in this Swedish saloon. The 2-door 121 is generally seen as the most attractive version and just happens to be the one we have on offer.
Christmas had just been when the first owner picked up his gorgeous light-blue Amazon. On the 30th December 1965 the keys were handed over and started of decades of caring for the car. Servicing and maintenance are done to schedule whilst the car itself has an easy life. After the original owner passed away his wife continued to use the car and when she died it became time for a new owner; their daughter. The car continued to be cherished as drivers often do when driving their parents car they owned from new. Over the last years the car has been used infrequently prompting the daughter to decide it had become time for a new chapter in the Amazon’s life. That is how this car has come to us in Brummen.
The Amazon’s bodywork is extremely original. With over 80% original finish the remaining parts have been resprayed. There is no evidence of corrosion and dints and dent are hard to spot. Brightwork, wheels and tyres are all in excellent condition as are the lighting components. The interior is likewise very original. The genuine upholstery is in a fantastic state. The family always used seat covers to protect the underlying upholstery, which explains why it has been kept in such good shape. The carpets were replaced at some time. The dashboard with all its original components is in a wonderful state.
This Amazon drives perfectly as we would expect from its B18 engine. The supple engine producing 75 hp does its work without complaint as does the transmission. Brakes and suspension are up to their respective tasks as is customary with reliable Amazons.
