Description

1990 Volkswagen T3 Westfalia Atlantic High Top 1.6 TD

A very original and well-preserved example of the sought-after Westfalia Atlantic High Top, retaining an unusually complete original Westfalia interior and equipment.

The camper starts first time and drives very well. The engine was replaced in 2009 and, importantly, I have the accompanying service record/booklet with dealer stamps documenting the mileage and servicing of the replacement engine.

The van has a current MOT until May 2027 with no advisories.

Original Westfalia interior and equipment

The interior is one of the strongest features of this Atlantic. It remains remarkably original and has not been modernised or substantially altered. The original cabinetry, upholstery and fittings remain in very good condition for the age of the vehicle.

Original features include the Westfalia control panel, original cab carpet, original front privacy curtain, original interior fittings and storage, and the original buddy box complete with its removable waste bin – an item that is often missing from surviving Westfalia interiors.

The original Westfalia identification plate is also present.

Camping equipment

The water system is working, including the tap and water pump. The original Westfalia three-way refrigerator is fully operational on gas, 12V and 240V mains electricity. The interior lighting and Westfalia control panel are also operational.

A replacement night heater has been fitted and works very well. The original Eberspächer heater remains in place for originality but would require servicing/checking before use.

The camper also has a removable solar panel with a Photonic Universe solar charging system for the starter and leisure batteries. The charging split can be adjusted between the two batteries.

The original bike rack is included, together with the original jack and other equipment shown in the photographs.

Body and condition

The body presents very well overall for a 36-year-old T3, and the high-top and exterior retain a very smart appearance. There have been localised body and paint repairs during its life, including some recent cosmetic work, and I have tried to show the vehicle honestly and comprehensively in the photographs rather than hide age-related imperfections.

As with many T3s of this age, there is some corrosion to the inner sill areas, visible from underneath the vehicle, which would benefit from future attention. The exterior bodywork and the areas inspected behind the black side trim are in good condition. This has been taken into account in the asking price.

This is not being presented as a concours-restored vehicle. It is an attractive, very usable and unusually complete original Atlantic that has survived without the interior being replaced or heavily modified.

The campervan has been a much-loved member of our family and has provided us with many memorable camping trips over the years, particularly down to Devon and Cornwall. We will be very sad to see him go, but the time has come for him to move on to a new owner who can hopefully enjoy many more adventures with him.

History and documentation

A substantial collection of paperwork accompanies the camper, including original German documentation and invoices dating back to 1990, later UK history and documentation relating to the replacement engine and its subsequent servicing. Photographs of the history file and engine service booklet are included in the gallery.

I have also made walk-around and engine-running videos so that prospective buyers, particularly those travelling from outside the UK, can get a much better impression of the vehicle before arranging to view it.

This Atlantic should particularly appeal to someone looking for an original Westfalia rather than a T3 that has been extensively modernised or converted.

Further photographs, information and inspection are very welcome for genuinely interested buyers.
