General Information:
More than 50 years ago, nobody imagined driving a Unimog 416 through New York, Tokyo, or Berlin. This Doka was designed as a work vehicle, offering the possibility for five people to travel comfortably to demanding off-road job sites.
The original historical documents, including the Daimler-Benz AG data card from the Gaggenau factory and the original vehicle registration document from 1971, are available.
Our Unimog is compact and agile. Thanks to its short wheelbase and a top speed of 95 km/h, it offers a wide range of possibilities for its future owner. Since it has been down-rated to a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes, it can be driven with a standard Class B driver's license.
After taking a seat on the air-suspended driver's seat, I quickly realize that my four passengers—even those of above-average height—can travel in complete comfort. The 5.7-liter six-cylinder engine runs perfectly. The heated front seats and the rear-view camera are practical additions.
Getting five people to agree on one activity is never easy, because once we set off, this vehicle offers countless possibilities for adventure.
One passenger wants us to make full use of all the technical equipment: Werner Type 535 front winch, heavy-duty transmission with auxiliary gearbox, crawler gears and reduction gears, Rockinger towing hitch, passenger car trailer hitch, Werner H64 mid-mounted winch, original Werner forestry protection plates at the front and rear, original Schmidt front mounting plate, hydraulic tipping cargo bed, air couplings at the front and rear, rear hydraulic connections, and additional front and rear work lights.
Another passenger insists on driving all the way to Paris because the Unimog is so comfortable. Someone else asks what has been restored, and the answer is: complete restoration including engine overhaul, installation of professionally rebuilt high-speed axles, insulated roof lining with integrated storage console, and installation of a heavy-duty pull-out platform on the cargo bed.
One passenger feels cold and asks to switch on the Eberspächer auxiliary heater. Another keeps taking photos and videos because we want to sell the vehicle—and he has already fallen in love with it.
Finally, everyone discusses the wheelbase of 2,900 mm and the cargo bed length of 1,450 mm.
On one point, however, everyone agrees:
Absolutely awesome.
