The R 129 was produced as the successor to the R 107 from 1989 until July 2, 2001.

Development of the R 129 began in the mid-1970s, but was postponed for the time being because the new generations of the W 201 and W 124 took up a lot of development resources. This also explains the unusually long production cycle of the predecessor model, the R 107.

The project was not resumed until around 1982. The design was finalized around 1984 and a patent was filed on October 2, 1986. Mercedes based the floor assembly on that of the W 124, but it was designed to meet convertible-specific requirements such as higher torsional rigidity.

The R 129 had a multi-link suspension and an automatically extending roll bar, which was deployed in fractions of a second to protect the occupants in the event of a rollover. Initially, the R 129 was available with a 6-cylinder in-line engine and a V8 engine, later the twelve-cylinder V-engine from the S-Class was also available.

Condition and history:

The SL was imported to Germany from the USA in 2015 and meticulously converted by the owner with the usual attention to detail for German registration and restored to a fantastic technical and visual condition.

As with his other cars from his collection, the owner spared no expense here until the car was in a wine-free condition.

For example, the entire hydraulic system, the hydraulics for the soft top and all wearing parts were repaired for €8,500.

This R129 was delivered from the factory with the AMG styling package and AMG wheels.

A wonderful car to drive. The rare panoramic glass hardtop is in perfect condition and at the end of 2026 this roadster will be 30 years old and can easily be classified as a classic car.

Market classification:

Really good R129s are rather rare today and even more so in original condition.
