Description

A UK-supplied, RHD 6.9 in factory black with black trim and only 87k miles from new.

The 450SEL 6.9 needs little introduction. The fastest four-door of its era and F1 drivers’ favourite wheels, it combined S-Class luxury, further enhanced by the adoption of Citroen’s hydropneumatic suspension, with supercar performance from that enormous dry-sumped, fuel-injected 6.9-litre V8. For a wealthy buyer in the late 70s, the 6.9 eclipsed all other big saloons at least from a performance perspective.

An original RHD car finished in its original 040 black, complete with a black interior. The interior is interesting as it is not how Mercedes trimmed it – it was originally black velour. The leather used is very soft and very expensive, and the door cards are leather covered too, as we’ve tried to show in the pictures. We suspect that this retrim was carried out when the car was early new or fairly new as we have seen a few 6.9s that were retrimmed when new to suit the buyer’s taste. The work is certainly of the highest quality.

Supplied new in Manchester, it moved straight to central London, bought by a firm of property surveyors in Grafton Street, W1. It remained in central London until it was acquired by its last owner in 2005. Only 4 previous owners are showing on the logbook and the last keeper for 21 years. With usage being sparing in recent years, the mileage today is just 87k.

The car is supplied with all its original books/manuals and service book containing 17 stamps. There is a file too, containing old MoTs going back to the 80s and bills/receipts.

The car had a full repaint in 2015 and in 2020 received new brakes including calipers, discs and pads. We have just replaced the battery and the two front suspension spheres.

The black paintwork still gleams beautifully with only a few blemishes visible up close to detract. The brightwork is good with nice bumpers. Underneath is very solid with very little in the way of previous repairs.

The interior has a lovely feel to it. The dashboard is immaculate with no cracks and rich woodwork – it’s unusual to find one of these cars with such a good dashboard and supports the claim that this car has always been kept inside. The leather is beautifully soft, the door cards and carpet excellent and there’s an immaculate period AMG steering wheel in superb condition. The headliner (trimmed in light grey cloth when the rest of the interior was done) is starting to get a little baggy.

Drives very well indeed with all the tyre-shredding torque you need and a beautifully compliant ride. The steering is lovely and tight and, following their refresh, the brakes are very strong. All in all, this is a great driving 6.9.

All equipment seems to work except for the AC, which is all there bar the belt so could be reinstated later if required.

All in all, this 6.9 is best described as a ‘driver’. Sure, there are improvements that can be made, but as it stands it’s a great looking, great driving example in the best colours with low miles and low owners. A truly iconic Classic Mercedes-Benz.
