Description

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 (W116) stands as one of the most formidable luxury performance saloons of its era—a flagship that combined engineering sophistication with understated authority.

Developed by Daimler-Benz and built on its own dedicated production line in Sindelfingen, the 450 SEL 6.9 was based on the long-wheelbase W116 S-Class platform. Although officially designated 6.9, its hand-assembled M100 V8 engine actually displaces 6.8 litres (6,834 cc), producing 286 PS (210 kW) and delivering power through a 4-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels. Built between 1975 and 1980, just 7,380 examples were produced, underscoring its exclusivity.

First unveiled to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in 1974, the model was conceived as the successor to the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3, raising the benchmark for high-performance executive cars. In period literature, it was referred to as the 450 SEL 6.9.

A defining feature of the car was its advanced hydropneumatic suspension system, fitted as standard, which ensured exceptional ride quality and automatic self-levelling under varying loads. This technology contributed to the car’s remarkable composure, blending limousine comfort with sports sedan dynamics.

This particular example carries an especially compelling provenance. First registered in May 1977 in the Osnabrück region of northern Germany as a company car for a painting and decorating business, it has had just two owners from new. Maintained meticulously by the supplying dealer, Mercedes Palberg GmbH, and later serviced by Bosch Dienst Zentrum Hartlage, the car was later acquired by the Hartlage family in 1984. It has remained in their care ever since, used on private registration plates for over three decades—reflecting a rare continuity of ownership and careful stewardship.

Finished in DB172 Anthracite Grey Metallic, the car retains a deep, attractive shine. While some panels have been refinished over the years to address minor cosmetic blemishes, the overall presentation remains highly impressive for a vehicle of this age. The chrome trim is abundant and in superb condition, offering plenty for the enthusiast to maintain and enjoy.

The car is currently fitted with 15-inch alloy wheels in place of the original 14-inch factory set; however, the original wheels are included in the sale. It is, of course, properly recorded within its German documentation.

A particularly charming period feature is the top-of-the-range Blaupunkt radio cassette system, which was among the most expensive options available at the time. Complete with microphone and a separate, flexible cockpit control unit, and fully operational, it adds a distinctive touch of vintage character.

All original handbooks are present, including the essential data card and two keys further supporting the car’s authenticity and provenance. Also accompanying the car is the most comprehensive history file, packed with invoices from over the decades, confirming the cars authentic two owner history.

Approaching five decades old, the car stands as a testament to careful ownership and longevity—viewing is strongly recommended to fully appreciate how well it has endured.

Altogether, the 450 SEL 6.9 represents a unique intersection of luxury, innovation, and raw performance—an enduring icon of Mercedes-Benz engineering at its peak.
