HISTORY
This Mercedes-Benz 180 D was a pioneer in the field of diesel and safety innovations. This particular car was built in 1958 at the Stuttgart factory and bears the model number 120.110 and chassis number 8505905. Following their introduction, these models, along with other Mercedes types, were nicknamed ‘Ponton’. The name referred to their modern body shape, in which separate components such as mudguards, bonnet and running boards were integrated into a single, flowing whole — a style known as the pontoon body. In the 1950s and 1960s, the diesel versions of the Ponton were the most popular, mainly due to their longevity and reliability. Many petrol cars were even converted to diesel at the time, making it increasingly difficult to find an original diesel version today. This example is beautifully and luxuriously finished. Due to its age, the car is also exempt from road tax and MOT in the Netherlands.

EXTERIOR
The car is finished in stylish dark green paintwork, which contrasts beautifully with the extensive chrome trim. It is not a show-quality car. The paintwork and chrome are in a fairly original condition, meaning normal signs of wear are visible. The same applies to the rubber seals and lighting. Two new wing mirrors were fitted in 2024. The bodywork has good panel alignment, suggesting a damage-free history.

INTERIOR
The interior features grey fabric upholstery and is in a fairly original condition with normal signs of wear. Here, one can enjoy comfort and luxury, certainly for that era. The impressively large steering wheel invites you to drive. The dashboard is partly black and partly grey and is finished with wood. In the centre is a small clock and a Philips radio. A fire extinguisher is located beneath the dashboard. The headlining is in good condition. The enormous boot (75% larger than its predecessor’s) accommodates the spare wheel.

TECHNICAL
The reputation of the 180 engines is nothing short of legendary. The tried-and-tested 180 diesel, the OM636 engine, was renowned for its exceptional longevity: mileages of 700,000 were no exception, and in some cases certificates were even awarded to vehicles that exceeded one million kilometres. The gearbox and drive shafts are also known for being extremely reliable and can easily cover more than half a million kilometres without requiring an overhaul. Furthermore, the brakes, steering and chassis are remarkably robust, contributing to the overall reliability of these models. The front suspension consists of double wishbones with coil springs and a stabiliser bar, whilst the rear uses swing axles with coil springs. Drum brakes are fitted at both the front and rear. The manual 4-speed gearbox is easy to operate and the car drives and changes gear smoothly.

GENERAL
After the Second World War, Mercedes-Benz first had to rebuild its factories and began by repairing vehicles and resuming production of older models such as the 170V and 170D. In the years that followed, the brand worked on more modern cars, which led to the introduction in 1953 of the Mercedes-Benz 180 W120 with a monocoque body. This new construction provided more space and improved safety, although the technology remained partly based on older designs. In 1956, the Mercedes-Benz 190 W121 followed, featuring improved engines and a modified rear axle, which noticeably enhanced performance and handling. Diesel variants also remained important due to their reliability and long service life. The Ponton models were well received and continuously developed, including with more powerful engines, minor exterior updates and innovations in safety. For instance, Mercedes-Benz played a pioneering role in passive safety, with reinforced bodywork and early applications of crumple zones and seatbelt anchor points. From 1954, a diesel variant was also available: the Mercedes-Benz 180 D.
