Met de W111-serie schreef Mercedes-Benz begin jaren zestig een eigen hoofdstuk in de Duitse autogeschiedenis. De karakteristieke staartvinnen leverden de auto de bijnaam "Heckflosse" op en maakten van deze sedan een direct herkenbare verschijning, terwijl Mercedes onder het plaatwerk vooral bezig was met veiligheid: de W111 was de eerste serieauto ter wereld met een kreukelzone en een stijve veiligheidskooi. With the W111 series, Mercedes-Benz wrote its own chapter in German automotive history in the early 1960s. The characteristic tail fins earned the car the nickname "Heckflosse" (tail fin) and made this sedan an instantly recognizable sight, while beneath the bodywork, Mercedes was primarily focused on safety: the W111 was the world's first production car with a crumple zone and a rigid safety cage. It is precisely this combination of elegance and robustness that makes the Heckflosse beloved by enthusiasts to this day. From 1965 onwards, the 230 S was the sporty top model of the six-cylinder petrol line: the 2.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine with twin carburetors delivers approximately 120 hp and gives the car a surprisingly smooth and powerful character.
