History – Mercedes-Benz 500E (W124)
The Mercedes-Benz 500E, introduced in 1990, is considered one of the most iconic and well-built sports sedans of the '90s. The model was developed as a discreet flagship model within the W124 series and was meant to showcase the maximum of what Mercedes-Benz could offer technically and qualitatively.
For development and production, Mercedes worked with Porsche. Due to space constraints in Mercedes' factories, the 500E was largely hand-assembled at Porsche's Zuffenhausen facility. The bodies were built by Mercedes, then sent to Porsche for the assembly of the engine, chassis, and drivetrain, and then returned to Mercedes for final finishing. This complex production process made the 500E exceptionally costly to produce and resulted in an unparalleled level of finishing.
The 500E was equipped with the 5.0-liter M119 V8, paired with an automatic transmission and a specially tuned suspension with a wider track. The model's exterior remained deliberately understated, with subtle flaring, modified bumpers, and larger wheels — the classic "wolf in sheep's clothing" concept.
In 1991, the 500E was in its early production years, before the name change to E 500 in 1993. These early examples are often particularly valued by enthusiasts for their original specification and direct link to the original development concept.
Today, the W124 500E is considered a modern classic and one of the best sporty sedans ever built by Mercedes-Benz — renowned for its build quality, performance, reliability, and timeless appeal.
