Its foundations lie in the W111 series, a model range that debuted in the late 1950s and evolved slowly and deliberately, without haste. The coupé received its own bespoke bodywork, designed by Paul Bracq, featuring a far calmer rear end than the well-known “Fintail” sedans. The fins all but disappeared.
