Beautiful Mercedes-Benz 280 CE with a lot of history, including the original booklets, Cardex card and extensive maintenance history. Imported to the Netherlands in 2009 with a mileage of 96,540 km, as noted on the MOT form. The first Dutch owner kept everything meticulously organised. Truly a very well-maintained car for enthusiasts.
The exterior looks great, the Distelsilber metallic colour suits the 280 very well, especially in combination with the green-tinted glass and the classic crown cap rims. These rims were powder coated in 2015 and fitted with excellent tyres. The doors still close like a safe, as was customary for a Mercedes at the time. The coupé is partly in its original paintwork and the known weak spots have been carefully addressed. In 2011, the underbody was treated with Dinitrol by the Dinitrol centre in Leeuwarden and the original sunroof mechanism was renewed, including new roof wipers. There are, of course, some signs of wear, but overall it looks very solid.
The interior is completely original and excellently preserved. The fabric on the seats is remarkably intact, and the carpeting and mats also look almost new. Both seats are height-adjustable and extremely comfortable. Between the spacious seats is the beloved centre armrest, which is of course a must in a W123. The dashboard has a rev counter, which cost 233 German marks at the time. Also available at a hefty extra cost was the iconic Becker Mexico radio-cassette recorder with motorised antenna and extra speakers with fader. And everything still works perfectly. The original headlining is perfectly dry, even around the sunroof. Other extras included the electrically adjustable right-hand wing mirror, a Halon fire extinguisher and a set of coconut mats.
The 280 CE has been excellently maintained. Just 1,800 kilometres ago, it underwent a service including two new tyres, a new battery and MOT. The bearing bushing in the automatic transmission has also been replaced and the shift points have been adjusted. At 109,081 km, the cylinder head was reconditioned and the exhaust manifold was replaced. The exhaust was then replaced during the MOT. The valves have just been adjusted and the brake fluid has been changed.
The C123 series was manufactured for over 10 years and, despite its high purchase price and steep surcharges for options, it was the most popular German mid-range car for many years. As every connoisseur knows, this Mercedes is the epitome of reliability, from a time when Mercedes built better cars than the competition. The unstoppable drive for quality and the very best craftsmanship ensured the proverbial German reliability. Once very popular as a “Rentner Fahrzeug” (pensioner's car) and in recent years becoming scarce as a coupé, especially in this beautiful unplastered condition.
