The Ghibli was first introduced in the 1960s and was designed by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro, who at the time was working for Ghia. His name would later become associated with cars such as the BMW M1, Lotus Esprit, Lancia Delta, and Volkswagen Golf, but with the Ghibli, his talent was already unmistakably evident.
The nose is exceptionally low, the headlights disappear completely into the bodywork, and the side profile flows almost uninterrupted toward the rear. Whereas many Italian sports cars of the period were still relatively rounded and graceful, the Ghibli suddenly looked much sharper and more modern.
The Spyder appeared in 1969 and was produced in extremely limited numbers. Only 125 examples left the factory as genuine open-top Ghiblis. That makes this not simply a rare variant, but one of the most exclusive open Maseratis of its generation.
The Ghibli uses a tubular frame with a body welded onto it. At the front, the suspension consists of double wishbones, coil springs, dampers, and an anti-roll bar. At the rear, Maserati chose a live axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, supplemented by hydraulic dampers and an anti-roll bar.
By now, the intention may already be clear: Maserati was not building a show car, but a fast grand tourer designed to cover great distances at high speed. And for that, of course, it needed an appropriate engine.
Under the long hood lies the matching-numbers 4.7-liter V8 with four overhead camshafts and dry-sump lubrication. It produces more than 300 horsepower and is paired with a ZF five-speed manual transmission. In 1969, those were genuinely impressive figures.
The performance was serious, but perhaps even more important was the way the V8 delivered its power. A deep, full-bodied eight-cylinder soundtrack, a beautiful spread of torque, and that unmistakable character that only Italian GTs from this era seem to possess.
The Ghibli was certainly not modest when it came to fuel consumption, incidentally. Maserati solved that problem fairly simply by fitting two separate fuel tanks of 50 liters each. That gave the car a total fuel capacity of 100 liters.
The wheels were special too. Magnesium wheels were part of the standard equipment, while Borrani wire wheels could be ordered as an option. This example was also equipped with air conditioning from the factory. A particularly desirable option for an open GT that was, after all, intended to cover long distances in comfort.
The Maserati was restored by a renowned Maserati specialist, and the quality of that work is visible at every level. It is not only the paintwork or the interior that has been finished beautifully. The details under the hood, the finish of the chassis, and the overall correctness of the car all make it clear that this is an example of a very high standard. In addition, this Ghibli is matching numbers and comes with Maserati Classiche certification.
This Maserati is a very special car for several reasons. You buy it for Giugiaro’s design. For that long hood and low-slung profile. For the magnificent 4.7-liter V8.
