Description

The introduction of the 550 Maranello in 1996, marked Ferrari’s return to the front engine, V12-powered GT cars that they made the company name on in the 1950s and 1960s. The 550 was produced until 2001 before being replaced by the significantly updated 575M Maranello in 2002. Although the cars looked very similar on the outside, under the skin Ferrari made a number of significant changes to the 550, turning it into a far more modern car. The biggest change by far was, as opposed to the manual-only 550 Maranello, the 575M now offered a 6-speed single-clutch paddle shift style gearbox- an option so popular that nearly 90% of the production came equipped with this transmission.

This 2005 Ferrari 575M Maranello shows just 12,650 kilometers at the time of cataloging and has been under the care of two owners from new. The silver paint- known as Argento Nurburgring- is a perfect color for this car, subtle yet shows of many of the interesting design changes on the 575. On this example, it is paired with a set of Scuderia Shields on the fenders and the ultra-desirable 19” Modular wheels, which were more commonly fitted on both cars with the GTC handling package and Superamerica. The consignor purchased the car in 2015 and it has only been driven 200 kilometers since his acquisition, and it presents in overall very good condition throughout.

The interior of the 575 is a beautiful blend of classic and modern from the era just before large screens took over the majority of the dashboard. Finished in stunning Cartier red leather, this 575M has been optioned with the sought-after Daytona-style seat inserts, which harken back to this car’s spiritual successor—the 365 GTB/4 Daytona of the late 1960s. When you sit in the driver’s seat, you are greeted by a perfectly sized Momo steering wheel, which frames the large central tachometer with a 7,750 rpm redline and a 340 km/h speedometer to its right. The dash binnacle was one of the major updates on the interior over the 550 Maranello and bridges the gap between the much older style of the previous car and the far more modern 599, which debuted the following year. It is also worth noting that this car includes its full original tool kit, still in its very desirable Scheodni leather case.

Powering the 575M is a 5.7-liter V12 rated at 508 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque, connected to a 6-speed automated manual “F1” transaxle. This was the first V12 car from Ferrari to be available with the F1-style gearbox and it works very well in this sort of grand touring car. On the 575M, Ferrari spent extended time in the wind tunnel and improved the car's aerodynamics so, when paired with the powerful V12, this was the first front-engined car from the brand to exceed 320 km/h.

The 575M went out of production at the beginning of 2006, replaced by the 599GTB. Since then, front-engine V12 Ferraris have grown larger and more extreme in their design, moving further away from the classic styling they had in the brand’s golden era of the 1950s and 1960s. The 575M represents a wonderful middle ground with its timeless look, paired with truly exceptional performance, it is no wonder these cars have begun catching the eye of more collectors every year. With its wonderful color scheme and just two owners from new, this example would be an excellent V12-powered addition to any garage.
