Rare & Authentic – The 1970 Citroën Méhari Series 1
With the cultural revolution of the late 1960s came a shift in automobiles as well. Leisure became more important, lifestyles grew more open, and cars became more colourful. The pop era had arrived in car design. America produced the Dune Buggy, the British the Mini Moke – and the French the Méhari. That this role fell to the nonconformists at Citroën seems only natural. Precisely because the Méhari is spartan and makes no attempt to be beautiful, it became an emblem of “radical chic,” as design historian Paolo Tumminelli describes. Even today, examples can be spotted along the Côte d’Azur and in the dunes of France’s Atlantic coast.
The Méhari we are offering is one of only around 200 examples sold in the United States in 1970. It spent its early life under the dry Californian sun, which has left it mercifully free from rust. Later, it was imported into Italy by Méhari specialist Nicolo Messaggi and fully restored using new parts produced under licence by the Méhari Club Cassis in France.
The chassis was reinforced and powder-coated, the entire mechanical system and engine overhauled (cylinders, valves, pistons, and piston rings), brakes and electrics refurbished, and drainage, seats, soft top, and tyres renewed. With Swiss and Italian documentation, it can be exported to the EU duty-free. In Switzerland, the Méhari is certified as a four-seater veteran vehicle.
Since restoration, it has covered just 900 miles and runs perfectly, as demonstrated by its successful participation in the 2022 Jungfrau Rally. The Méhari remains an unparalleled fun car, still stealing the spotlight from far more expensive vehicles.
