The Mini Cooper S is rightly regarded as one of the most influential and enjoyable performance cars of the 1960s, combining giant-killing competition pedigree with characterful road manners. Today, early Mk. I 1275cc Cooper S models remain among the most sought-after variants, prized for their rarity, authenticity and unmistakable driving experience.

Built on 16th June 1964 and dispatched the very same day to Golders Green, London, this example is accompanied by a Heritage Certificate confirming it was originally specified in the ever-popular combination of Old English White with a black roof and red interior. The history file is particularly impressive, containing the original green buff logbook, an original owner's handbook and period tuning manual. Purchased during the 1990s in need of restoration, the car was subsequently acquired in 2005 by a Mini enthusiast who embarked upon a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration. Completed over an eight-year period, the work is documented by a collection of photographs showing the various stages of the rebuild. Since completion, fewer than 2,500 miles have been covered, helping to explain the wonderfully fresh presentation the car enjoys today.

The current owner, a dedicated collector of desirable 1960s British classics, acquired the Mini in 2019 and has continued to maintain it regardless of cost. In 2022, the car was entrusted to the highly respected Somerford Mini, renowned for their exacting standards and attention to detail, where a comprehensive inspection and recommissioning programme resulted in expenditure of more than £4,700. A further £3,000 was invested with the same specialist in late 2023, together with additional expenditure on engine tuning, a new manifold and associated works. Our vendor also had adjustable suspension fitted by Somerford Mini, to improve the handling even further and reports it is a dream to drive. The accompanying invoices demonstrate a meticulous approach to maintenance, with countless details attended to by one of the UK's foremost Mini specialists.

Offered only because the vendor already owns another Cooper S that he has enjoyed for even longer, this beautifully restored and carefully maintained Mk. I represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of Britain's most iconic performance cars. Given the quality of the restoration, modest mileage covered since completion and extensive specialist expenditure, it offers exceptional value in today's market. Consigned by Fraser Smith
