In 1952 Austin and Healey started a collaboration to produce sports cars especially for the U.S. market. This resulted in the launch of the Austin-Healey 100, the first-ever "Big Healey": an expression subsequently used to distinguish the 100, its successor the six-cylinder 100-6 and the Austin-Healey 3000 from the smaller Austin-Healey Sprite. Over 80% of the Big Healey's were sold in the USA. From the outset, the car was a commercial success and the first victories in racing soon followed.
The Austin-Healey 3000 was produced from 1959 to 1967 and is the best known and most successful of the Big Healey's. The 3000 finished high in many European rallies. Even today, 3000's participate in many classic races.
The exterior was a lot like its predecessors and the 3000 too was available in two models:
2+2 and a two-seater. The body was a Jensen product.
The first version of the 3000 was built from March 1959 to March 1961 and was named MK I after the introduction of the MK II. The MK II had a more powerful engine and three carburettors. After 6,100 copies sold, the MK II in 1964 was succeeded by the last version of the 3000: the MK III with a 150 hp engine, two carburettors and a luxurious interior with a walnut veneer dashboard and roll-down windows. Leather seats were optional. No less than 87% of the Austin-Healey’s 3000 MK III was sold in the USA!
In 1968, the safety regulations in the USA were tightened and Austin-Healey decided to focus on other markets. The 20-year agreement between Healey and Austin came to an end in 1972. Austin merged with British Leyland and Donald Healey became director at Jensen Motors.
From the late 80s onward, many Austin-Healey's came to mainland Europe, since the U.S. Big Healey’s were after all LHD!
Invoices in the documentation for this Austin-Healey 3000 MK III show that the Healey was completely converted into a rally car between September 2013 and April 2014. Various rally accessories were fitted, such as spotlights with protective grilles, a black hardtop, a racing fuel cap, bonnet straps, four-point seat belts, tripmasters, an aluminium radiator, modified shock absorbers, an aluminium gear knob with overdrive switch, a master cut-off switch, and so on. In addition, several modifications were carried out, including upgrades to the cooling system, shock absorbers, ball joints, steering box, and lighting. The wheels were finished in high-gloss black, a Welch alternator was installed, a high-torque starter motor was fitted, a leather steering wheel was added, and more.
In July 2014, the bonnet was replaced with a louvred bonnet, and a number of further fine-tuning adjustments were made.
The company that carried out this work was Wheels by Lex in the Netherlands. The documentation includes extensive invoices detailing exactly all the parts that were installed and used during the conversion.
After this conversion/restoration, the car has covered only approximately 5,000 miles and remains in very good condition.
