Description

Raleigh 1922ca 2¾ HP 348cc side valve “2¾ HP Lightweight” frame # 11773 engine # 11340

In the beginning of the 20th century Raleigh’s main business is in the cycle trade. Company founder Frank Bowden is a firm believer in variable gear systems and from the end of 1902 the Raleigh Cycle company puts the Sturmey-Archer cycle hub gear on the market. There is some motorcycle production between 1899 and 1906, but only after the first world war serious thought is given again to motorcycle production.
In the early twenties a 699 cc flat twin is produced; from 1922 mostly side valve singles are put on the market. These economical, well-made machines are fitted with an external flywheel and prove to be great sellers. The 1922 “Lightweight ”and “Sports “ models can be had with chain-cum-belt transmission only. For 1923 also chain driven models become available. The 2¾ HP engine has bore x stroke dimensions of 71x88mm. There’s also a 3 HP version available with dimensions of 76x88mm and a cubic capacity of 378cc. Front forks are of the Brampton-type and are made under license in the Raleigh factory. The gearbox is mady by Sturmey Archer (which is owned by the Raleigh company) and is available in 2-speed or 3-speed versions.
The machine on offer is fitted with a 3-speed gearbox. She’s an older restoration in a nicely patinated condition and has a current road registration. Accessories include acetylene lighting system, bulb horn, “Britton” tyre pump and pillion seat.
