Description

Indian 1925 Scout 600cc side valve V-twin engine # 56Y530

After WW I the Indian factory decides it is time to add a lighter model to the range that complements the successful 1000cc PowerPlus. The new machine is labelled “Scout” and it creates a sensation when brought out in 1920. The strong points of the new design are easy handling, lightness, ample power for the 1920s roads and unbeatable reliability. The new middleweight is also appealing to the prospective motorcyclists who are put off by the usual heavyweight big twins. The Scout features a semi-unit construction power plant with a 3 –speed transmission bolted on to it. Primary drive is by a set of helical gears that are enclosed in a cast aluminium cover and run in an oil bath. The clutch is foot-controlled. Year by year the design is finetuned and also for the 1925 season there are quite a few new features: removable cylinder heads, larger valves, improved clutch with greater plate area and a different type of saddle suspension to insure greater riding comfort and lower riding position. For better engine breathing wider valve cam profiles are utilised. The 1925 brochure contains a power chart that shows a 20% power increase for the 1925 Scout as compared to the 1924 model: max power is now 13hp@3500rpm. A notable change in the front suspension construction is that the rockers are now placed in front of the wheel spindle to give more leverage and rebound check.
This nice older-restoration Scout comes complete with full electrical lighting system including tanktop-mounted amp gauge and switch and is fitted with a practical side stand and steering damper.
