Description

The Ducati 900 Super Sport of 1976–1977 stands as one of the most iconic motorcycles ever built – a purist’s machine that captured the spirit of 1970s European racing in its rawest form. Inspired by the legendary 750SS that dominated Imola in 1972, the 900SS took everything a step further: a larger, torquier engine, desmodromic valve actuation, and Ducati’s signature bevel-drive engineering. It quickly became the benchmark for riders demanding uncompromising performance with hand-built Italian soul.

Where Japanese manufacturers offered power and reliability, Ducati delivered character. The 900SS was lighter, more tactile, and more involving – a thoroughbred machine for true enthusiasts. With its silver-and-blue racing livery, sculpted tank, and numbered Conti silencers, it was also a visual masterpiece. The 864cc L-twin, fed by 40mm Dell’Orto carburetors, delivered over 70 hp – enough to rival and often outperform contemporaries like the BMW R90S, Moto Guzzi Le Mans, and even Kawasaki’s Z1.

### The example on offer

This particular 1976–1977 Ducati 900SS has undergone a complete mechanical restoration by the undisputed specialist for this model in Germany – often referred to as “the Pope of the 900SS.” No expense was spared to bring it into pristine condition. Works carried out include:

- New mounting bracket
- New battery and fuse holder
- Brand-new tires and tubes, professionally balanced
- New brake discs front and rear
- New master cylinders front and rear
- Full oil and filter service
- Valve clearance checked, spark plugs replaced
- New exhaust gaskets
- Engine carefully inspected and refreshed

Although road-ready, the bike has not been ridden since the overhaul due to the previous owner’s Achilles tendon injury. It remains in collector-grade condition, retaining all its hallmarks of originality: numbered Conti silencers, correct Dell’Orto PHM 40mm carburetors, and the rare right-side gear shift – unique to early models.

### A rare opportunity

With fewer than 3,500 units produced in this configuration and ever-growing international demand, early 900SS models are among the most coveted Ducatis of all time. Their mechanical purity, racing DNA, and aggressive elegance make them true centerpiece machines in serious collections.

This example is not only correct and original in appearance, but mechanically exceptional thanks to expert-level restoration. A unique chance to own one of the last great analog superbikes – built in an era when Ducati still stood for hand-crafted, uncompromising excellence.

Ready to be admired. Or ridden. Or both.
