Description

1927 Rolls Royce 20hp Park Ward Saloon.
Chassis number: GHJ17
Registration number: FG2766
A wonderfully original car that has resided its entire life in Scotland. We took the car from a small estate inland from Aberdeen. The previous owner acquired the car in 2010. Prior to that it last changed hands in 1945. The car was ordered by a Mrs Crighton of Cupar in 1927 via agents Croall & Sons of Edinburgh. Park Ward were entrusted with the task of constructing the six light division coachwork that we find on the car today.
Just a bit of information that may be of interest to prospective purchasers. I drew your advert to the attention of an acquaintance who has been researching the Crichton (not Crighton) family. The first owner of this vehicle was James Beilby Crichton, Dundee jute merchant, born 1861. He made his money in India c.1890-1910. He returned to the UK in 1910 and became a landowner and farmer, purchasing Luthriebank House, Luthrie, near Cupar. In 1911, plans were submitted for a motor garage and power house at the property. J B Chricton was a local magistrate, Freeman of the borough of Cupar, Director of Tayside Floorcloth Company, Director of Cupar Savings Bank, etc etc. He died in 1938. His widow, Alice Laurie (who he had married in Bengal in 1892) died in 1942. As far as I is known, they had no children.
This car is one of those untouched time warp cars that has escaped the attentions of restorers over the years. The interior leather is of spectacular furniture grade chestnut coloured hide & is in fantastic order given its great age. Unusually the leather extends to the rear seating as well as the front & twin fold out occasional seats. All woodwork is original, intact & in fine condition. I have rarely seen a finer original interior then this.
Paint is grey over black & is in a condition commensurate with the rest of the car. My suggestion is to leave it exactly as it is & enter the car in the preservation class at any events it attends. Artillery wheels are fitted all round as are the twin side mount spares. A good sized luggage trunk resides on the rear.
Under the previous ownership the car has had £6000 spent on it with Marque Specialists Milford Vintage Engineering. This included a full servicing & attention to the brakes & Kingpins along with a host of other small items that needed doing. As a result the car is in fine running order & has appeared regularly on highland roads over the past 5 years of ownership.
The fabric roof covering has unfortunatley got to the stage where it needs to be replaced so this has just been beaurtifully done my noted trimmer Gary Wright in a harmonious fashion so it does not come across as being brand new in keeping with the rest of the car.
