Porsche 550 Spyder, built between 1954 and 1957
One of the few remaining originals was auctioned at Bonhams for GBP 4.6 million, almost €5.5 million.
No other manufacturer was as successful as Porsche's road model with racing specifications. At its production launch in
1954, the Porsche 550 Spyder cost 24,600 DM, today worth several million.
It was designed as a mid-engined roaster by VW dealer W. Glöckler and his plant manager H. Ramelow.
The Type 550 became famous, the preferred brand of James Dean and Steve McQueen, as well as the legendary racing driver Hans Hermann, who competed in successful races such as the Carrera Panamericana, the Mille Miglia, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The Furmann Type 547 engine (four-cylinder boxer engine with air cooling) and vertical shaft produced 110 hp and a top speed of 240 km/h. Today, you'd have to pay around €360,000 for just one Fuhrmann engine.
The vehicle pictured is 100% identical to the original. This is a replica from Chamonix, just like the VW factory in Brazil. Originals and replicas were actually only built for the US market, so this 550 Syder also came from America. All non-original add-ons from Chamonix were made from original Porsche parts ordered from the USA.
The vehicle's underbody with its flat frame was made of aluminum, as were parts of the interior. To accommodate the Porsche racing engine No. 2002 from 1984, the engine mounts were reinforced. Sport/racing engines may experience minor leaks - please check.
The ignition system is equipped with a rev limiter - if this is disabled or
deliberately destroyed (exceeding the rev limit), the warranty will immediately be void.
