Description

Morris Minor 1000 Traveller – The British estate car with more charm than many a roadster

There are cars that punch you in the gut at first glance – and then there’s the Morris Minor Traveller, which rather gently embraces you like a British gentleman in a checked jacket with a pipe in the corner of his mouth.

History – A wooden skeleton on four wheels

Welcome to 1969: The Beatles are still writing hits, people wear flared trousers, and Morris decides it’s a good idea to build an estate car that looks as if a Victorian garden shed had been bolted onto a chassis. That’s exactly what the Traveller was – a wooden body with less to do with structural engineering and more with British eccentricity.

Nevertheless (or perhaps because of it), the Traveller became the darling of allotment gardeners, Labrador owners and hobby carpenters. You could throw in anything – from a picnic basket to half your household.

This example was built in 1969, found its way to Italy in 1981, and has since enjoyed la dolce vita – naturally with right-hand drive.

Engineering – Simple, robust, endearing

Under the bonnet works the legendary 1098 engine (Type 10MA U-H), an inline-four with around 48 hp. Sounds modest, but it’s more than enough to potter through Tuscany or prowl the local market.

The technology is British-pragmatic: little frills, little electronics – what isn’t there can’t break. You just have to keep an eye on the oil and care for the wooden frame so it doesn’t turn into compost.

Design – When wood isn’t decoration but structure

✅ Original wooden body that also serves as a load-bearing element
✅ Green upholstery – as British as warm beer
✅ Right-hand drive – because Continental Europeans also need practice

From the outside, the Traveller looks like a mobile joinery project, but inside it’s surprisingly cosy. Step in, and you’ll instantly know: this isn’t just any estate car.

Personal story – An Englishman with an Italian vita

This Morris hasn’t just been preserved but cherished. It earned the coveted ASI Targa Oro certificate – a knighthood in the Italian classic car scene. The condition is good, without the over-restored shine that can make you suspicious.

The last inspection was in November 2023 and is valid until 11/2026. In short: it’s ready for new adventures – whether in Tuscany, Provence, or at the Goodwood classic car meeting.

Conclusion – A car like a British gentleman

The Morris Minor Traveller isn’t a car you buy to go fast. You buy it because it embodies an attitude: composure, humour and a touch of eccentricity.

So if you want a car that can tell more stories than any modern SUV – here you go. And if you’re still hesitating: just buy a Passat estate. But don’t complain when nobody looks twice as you drive up.
