1964 Mercedes O 319 motorhome – The star on four wheels with a living-room view
There are classic cars you love because they rattle charmingly. And there are those you love because they tell stories. The 1964 Mercedes O 319? It doesn’t tell a story. It is one.
Back then, it was the flagship of luxury travel on Germany’s roads. Not a converted van, not an off-the-shelf camper – no, this O 319 was manufactured directly by Mercedes-Benz in collaboration with the renowned coachbuilder Auwärter as a motorhome. A one-off. A rolling suite for the jet-setters of the economic miracle era. And as if that weren’t rare enough: the entire body is made of aluminium. No rust, just space and sophistication.
Design & Features – Like a grand hotel in six metres
Inside, a spacious seating area awaits, which transforms in seconds into a bed wider than most hotel beds.
The huge windows turn every view into a panoramic vista. Whether it’s the Alps or a motorway service station – here you sit as if in a conservatory on rails. Sanitary facilities? Naturally. A shower and toilet are on board. As are a fitted kitchen, heating system and storage space for weeks on end. And then the cherry on the cake: an electrically retractable awning. In the 60s, this was the automotive sensation. Today, it’s simply brilliant.
Technology – A classic with a modern heart
Originally fitted with a rather leisurely engine, it was fittingly upgraded in 1992 to a 2.3-litre petrol engine from the W124 series (Mercedes M102E). This is complemented by a Laycock overdrive gearbox and hydraulic power steering. The result? A completely relaxed cruising speed of 120 km/h, without the feeling that your coffee is about to slide off the table.
And because style also requires comfort: original Scheel suspension seats ensure that even the Brenner Pass becomes a leisurely drive. The tow bar allows for a load of up to 1,500 kg, should the classic car ever need to pull a classic car trailer.
Condition – Aged with dignity
Of course, after over 60 years, a car is allowed to have a few laugh lines. There is some minor paintwork damage, but this is the original paint – and you don’t just scrape that off. With a bit of care, this can be fixed in no time. The bodywork? Excellent. The O 319 has spent most of its life parked in a garage, which explains the incredibly low mileage of 14,672 km.
It was last MOT-approved in 2021 – with minor faults. Since then, it has been fitted with new tyres, new brakes, new rubber mounts, new brake lines and a freshly serviced engine.
Bottom line – if you don’t snap this up, you must enjoy sleeping in tents
This vehicle isn’t just a motorhome. It’s a manifesto. A statement against run-of-the-mill grey and plastic campers. If you’re looking for a piece of motoring history that’s not just rare, but unique – offering comfort, character and charisma – you’ve found it here.
