Description

This exceptionally rare Mercedes-Benz 170VA Cabriolet has become available as a restoration project. While the W136 series are becoming increasingly difficult to come across, the likes of the Cabriolet versions are incredibly scarce. As a finished article, this Mercedes will be a very valuable piece of motoring history.

Production of the W136 series of Mercedes began in 1936. Figures across the range of 170V, 170S and such up until 1942 was 75,000 units. With a pause in production of this series throughout the war, the W136 series was reignited. The 170Va examples were produced only from 1950-1952 in a smaller production run as manufacturing ramped up. Many 170Va examples were used as daily driving cars therefore due to extensive use and lack of preservation, there are very few surviving examples. As with the cabriolets being more expensive and slightly more impractical at the time, numbers for the open top 170 were in the hundreds as opposed to the thousands of the saloon iterations. GF7956 is a Cabriolet B model which is identified by the capacious 4-seat design of the interior as opposed to the 2+2 offering of the A.

The W136 series was powered by a 1.8L In-Line 4-cylinder engine producing 45ps, this engine was an uprated version of the prewar offering of a 1.7L that made 38ps. The cockpit is a lovely place to be with the 4-speed gearbox being a unique difference to the usual luxury cabriolet offerings within this bracket.

We would invite enquiries from people who would consider taking this rare motor car back to its former glory. The car does require bodywork, paint and trim, plus mechanical re-commissioning but with a new battery the Mercedes Benz engine does run sweetly. We are of course happy to quote a completion price, or the car can be sold exactly as it is.
