Timeless Power – The 1979 XJ12
By the late 1960s, sprawling luxury saloons were no longer “in”. It seems that the societal upheaval of the time had trimmed the aristocratic upper class to a more “approachable” scale. While the Jaguar XJ series, introduced in 1968, draws inspiration from its predecessors, it is far more restrained and streamlined in its design – overall, a successful blend of elegance and understatement.
Although the XJ models appear less elitist than their forebears, they set new standards in ride comfort and noise insulation. At the time, the German magazine auto motor und sport remarked: “In its entire character, the XJ6 is as far removed from the so-called mass automobile as German vehicles can never be.”
Indeed, the XJ6 is quieter, faster, and significantly more composed on the road, even compared with the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. The same holds true for the XJ12, introduced in 1972, which was unrivalled as a twelve-cylinder saloon. The following spring, Jaguar unveiled the revised second series, with a front design that appeared more harmonious and less conservative.
This XJ12 was delivered in February 1979 to the director of the Lausanne-based industrial machinery manufacturer Bobst SA. It is therefore one of the last XJ12s of the second series, as production ended in that very month. All servicing was carried out at the Garage de Tivoli in Lausanne, the official Jaguar dealer who also sold the car, until 1984. To this day, it retains its original Squadron Blue exterior and Biscuit-coloured interior.
Over the past three years, nearly CHF 16,000 has been invested in the saloon, and its valid vintage MOT dates from 2022. As we are offering the XJ12 as a no-reserve auction, some work may still be required for a technically flawless vehicle.
