In 1946 Bentley was ready to exhibit its first new model following the war; the Mk VI. A descendent of the old 4 ½ Litre with important improvements such as independent suspension and more power. The Bentley may occupy the same category as the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn but he is just that little bit lighter and smaller. The engine, the well-known 4.25-litre six-cylinder, produces 137 hp. That is something not many cars of that time have on board.

Mr L. Dore-Smith must have been a flamboyant character, or else why in 1949 buy a unique Bentley Mk VI with open Park Ward bodywork? This is not just any old bodywork, it is one with a story attached to it, Bentley built eight prototypes of the Mk VI, chassis numbers 1-B-VI to 8-B-VI. Seven had closed bodywork. Chassis number 5-B-VI was the only one with a Drophead coupe top by the exclusive supplier of Park Ward. These cars were tested to the hilt and in 1949 5-B-VI was thrashed for 141,000 miles. Interestingly the coachwork was not subjected to this ordeal, it had been dismantled and stored.
So it has come about this car still exists. Under a year later Dore-Smith reunited the bodywork and the ‘49 chassis, with this British convertible ready in 1950 to be collected by the first and undoubtedly very proud owner, who all of a sudden possessed a Bentley with prototype status.
In the past, this car has been extensively restored. That is why this Royal blue bodywork with its ‘short-wing’ wheel arches looks so stylish and extraordinary. The mechanical side as well as the rather stylish grey interior trim and woodwork were fully attended to. Take it from us that every detail is as good as it looks in the pictures, beautiful both inside and outside.

The 4,257 cc six-cylinder with two twin SU carburettors is a lovely piece of engineering. Lots of torque and power make this Bentley a very smooth car to drive. The hydraulic power steering was a first for Bentley. Comfort, peace, and suppleness all make this period Bentley a one-off.

Over the last few years, maintenance has been kept to a very high standard with the last service haven taken place recently. Many of these cars end up unused in collections, this car on the other hand has just been superbly maintained, going by the large pile of invoices. There is a complete file containing the car’s history, maintenance records, many MOT’s and interesting documents. Price reduction from € 165,000,- to € 139,950,-
