The BMW E9 is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful grand tourers of its era. The range began with the 2800 CS, followed by the 3.0 CS and fuel-injected 3.0 CSi. It was later joined by the lightweight 3.0 CSL, before production concluded with the 2500 CS.

Regardless of engine size or specification, the E9 remains one of BMW’s most iconic designs. This 1973 BMW 3.0 CSi combines the elegant styling of the legendary “shark” with an impressive mechanical specification, excellent presentation and a fascinating international history.

Exterior: Finished in an attractive golden colour, this BMW has the ideal ride height and a beautifully balanced stance. The original wheels have recently been refurbished and are fitted with Michelin tyres, giving the car a particularly striking appearance.

The chrome work and rubber trim are in excellent condition, as are the original BMW badges. Sold new in Italy, the car retains its lightly tinted original-style glass.

The underside presents very well and remains clean, solid and remarkably original. The original undertray is still fitted—a detail missing from many E9s today and no longer available as a replacement part.

Interior: The cabin is trimmed in black cloth and remains in excellent condition. An additional set of coconut-fibre mats has been fitted over the original carpets to provide extra sound insulation and protect the original flooring.

At some point in the car’s history, a previous owner removed the headrests. They were not refitted, and the current owner does not have them. Replacement headrests can be sourced and installed if desired. Their absence also creates a particularly clean exterior view through the cabin.

The beautiful wood trim and dashboard are well preserved, while all instruments are functioning correctly. The car is equipped with power windows all around and features a period-style Nardi steering wheel. A classic radio complements the interior and maintains the authentic character of the car.

The headliner was replaced approximately ten years ago and still presents as new. The luggage compartment is also in excellent condition, including the original tool tray. The original jack and spare wheel remain correctly stored in their designated positions.

Engine and Driving Experience: The mechanical condition and driving experience are among the car’s greatest strengths. The BMW 3.0 CSi offers a rewarding combination of smooth performance, grand-touring comfort and excellent road presence.

The five-speed Getrag 007500 EM gearbox provides well-spaced ratios and relaxed high-speed cruising, making the car particularly enjoyable on longer journeys and motorways. The combination of the fuel-injected straight-six engine, five-speed manual transmission and balanced chassis delivers the engaging driving character for which the BMW E9 is renowned. In my personal experience, this particular BMW 3.0 CSi is the best-driving BMW I have ever driven. You cannot fully appreciate this car until you have driven it yourself.

History and Documentation: This BMW 3.0 CSi was sold new in Italy in 1972. It later travelled to New Jersey in the United States before returning to Europe in 2007.

The car was first registered in Switzerland after its return to Europe and subsequently registered in Sweden in 2016, where it has remained with the same owner. It has been carefully maintained and continuously improved over the years, resulting in the excellent condition presented today.

The car is accompanied by its original owner’s manual and all available MOT inspection documents from its time in Sweden.
