Colors and paint finishes
Two exclusive special paint finishes were developed specifically for the Final Edition: the color "Designo Brilliant Black Metallic" (code 250). Another new development was the special color "Silver Arrow" (code 777) offered to Final Edition customers. Like Brilliant Black, the Silver Arrow paint is a glossy, radiant finish, creating a very vibrant effect.
Wheels & Tires
When it came to the wheels, Mercedes relied on its racing partner AMG for its Final Edition. The latter provided a particularly dynamic and very large 18-inch wheel: the AMG Styling I.
The edge of the fenders of the Final Edition was beaded at a 110° angle.
The AMG Styling I light-alloy wheels of the Final Edition are painted in matte "Sterling" silver (paint code 9709). The exact designation and dimensions of the rims for the front axle are 8.5 J x 18 ET 25, and the wide-base tires are 245/40 ZR 18. The rear axle is 9.5 J x 18 ET 23 with 275/35 ZR 18 tires.
In addition, there was a variant of each rim with a so-called high-sheen outer flange, where the outer part of the rim was polished to a high gloss instead of a matte finish. (Code 795) Instead of the standard simple chrome star in the center, the edge of the Final Edition's wheel center cap is adorned with an additional, classic blue laurel wreath in the style of the emblem on the hood.
Soft and hard top
The Final Edition comes standard with a black, very practical, three-window fabric roof, which is fully automated and artfully disappears into the storage compartment behind the passenger compartment.
The Final Edition hardtop has been nicely upgraded on the interior compared to the regular R129 version, with the B and C pillars being covered in anthracite leather and featuring black decorative stitching. This continues the leather trim on the A pillars described on the interior page, thus maintaining the high-quality interior impression, even in the hardtop area.
Other Final Edition Special Features
Another fine detail of the Final Edition is the special wind deflector, which has been given a high-gloss chrome frame instead of a black one. You should keep an eye on the special Final Edition wind deflector, as it now costs €995 from Mercedes, when it is available again.
Another special feature of the Final Edition becomes apparent when getting in and out: When opening the doors, the driver and front passenger are greeted by illuminated "SL final edition" lettering integrated into the sills. The illuminated lettering on the stainless steel is a real eye-catcher.
Last but not least, the "final" distinguishing feature can be found on the outside of the front fenders: Each special model received a discreet "final edition" plaque.
Lighting
Modern xenon headlights appropriately round off the upscale touch of the last 129s.
Interior and Inner Values
Stepping into a Final Edition is a joy, as the interior of the car is all about refined elegance and a feel-good atmosphere. All surfaces have been upgraded both visually and tactilely. The entire dashboard, including the glasses compartment and the airbag area, the center armrest, and the doors are covered in soft leather instead of the plastic used in the series. The controls are either embedded in a radiant, finely grained wood or enhanced with leather upholstery and chrome-silver trim.
The Wood Trim
An exclusive wood for the Final Edition: Curly Maple designo Natural.
The "curly maple" wood significantly brightens the interior with its intense color and, thanks to its curved grain, offers a magnificent accent. Opinions are divided when it comes to "wood in cars," but in the case of curly maple, it has a pleasantly fresh feel, not a bit dated like "Rustic Oak."
In the Final Edition, not only the front section is encased in wood, as in the series, but also the entire center console, including the gearshift gate, and the tunnel, including the armrest and the "roller blinds" for the standard CD compartments and the ashtray/cigarette lighter. This significantly reduces the amount of plastic elements otherwise installed in the interior.

The steering wheel and gearshift lever of the Final Edition are also trimmed in wood and covered in leather. The wood doesn't interfere with steering at all, as the "outer" surface, which is actually used, is made of leather.
Handcrafted Full Leather Interior
Compared to the standard model, the Final Edition boasts a truly luxurious array of leather elements. A fine nappa leather, which Mercedes calls "Exclusive Leather," was used for this.
Exclusive Leather
First, all the seat surfaces, including the surrounds of the integral seats where the belts are routed, were covered in leather, as were the seat backs and headrests.
Door Panels
The door panels and armrests also received leather upholstery, which is both attractive and pleasant to the touch.
In the case of the Final Edition's Exclusive Leather trim, various other surfaces were upgraded that were only covered with the plastic known as "MBTex" in the standard version.
Leather-covered areas include:
The entire dashboard from the driver to the passenger side, including the instrument cluster, the glasses compartment, and the airbag area.
The interior trim of the A-pillars.
The interior trim of the B and C-pillars (which, of course, are only visible when the hardtop is in use - see exterior).
The sun visors – a true work of art, these are truly a masterpiece of sewing, and are worth more than a glance.
The front, inner, lower section of the fabric roof around the grab handle.
The armrest between the seats. Here, both the upper, sliding lid of the storage compartment and the base underneath were covered in leather.
The automatic gearshift lever, or rather the head of the gearshift lever (still with a metal base and wood inlays in curly maple)
The steering wheel
The door frames and the interior door panels
The convertible top compartment and the roll bar were also covered in exclusive nappa leather. Mercedes lists the color as black in the brochure, but it looks more like a very dark anthracite, which fortunately doesn't get greasy too quickly.
The nappa leather is considered somewhat softer and therefore more pleasant to the touch than the originally processed, somewhat coarser leather, but it is still just as durable. Furthermore, the leather seats feature a modern-looking pin-stitch perforation, providing very pleasant ventilation – probably also compared to the smooth leather used in the previous Facelift 2 models – which is less sweaty in summer and very comfortable in winter.
The seats, the center armrest, and several elements of the door center panels continue to feature subtle light gray decorative or contrasting threads. Compared to a simple leather interior, this gives the seating area a much more sophisticated look, and any damage to the leather surfaces is less noticeable, even on less well-maintained models, thanks to the relaxed segmentation. However, the seams in the visible areas, i.e., on the dashboard, the ABC pillars, the sun visors, the steering wheel, and also in the area of the convertible top compartment, have been kept unobtrusive. Here, they are also clearly visible, but are designed with discreet black threads.
The Rear Compartment
Behind the front seats, the R129 comes standard with a large, carpeted storage area with two lockable storage compartments. The interior fabric is a very dark gray, which isn't quite as delicate as a black carpet would have been; the material has a fairly long pile and is therefore beautifully fluffy and soft.
Chrome and Metal Elements
The entire instrument panel of the Final Edition was framed around its outer edge with a non-reflective, matte aluminum frame (the frame is black in the standard version). Each individual instrument cluster was also surrounded by a narrow chrome ring (this was already the case with the Facelift 2 model), giving the gauges a more classic yet sportier appearance than vehicles without these rings. Furthermore, the instrument needles in the Final Edition are white instead of orange, and their center caps are made of aluminum instead of black plastic. The frame around the illuminated gearshift gate in the center console is made of chrome instead of black plastic.
The metallic elements give the Final Edition a great roadster design, reminiscent of the chrome gauges of older sports car generations.
Leather, Wood & Chrome
Another small change was also made in the footwell: The removable black velour carpets installed here are now framed with silver piping, similar to the leather seats, and each features an integrated metal badge with the inscription "SL" on the front edge.
For music enjoyment and navigation (yes, that really did exist), the MB Audio 30 APS radio/CD/navigation system was installed, which still meets today's standards. Although the system was developed by Becker for Mercedes, it is not compatible with its Becker counterpart. Small symbols and excellent voice output guide the car to its destination via short, fast, or dynamic routes via TMC.
Otherwise, the Audio 30 APS features an RDS radio with a multi-band hi-fi tuner and freely assignable station buttons. Unfortunately, there is no line-in connection. Regarding other music playback options, it should be noted that while it was possible to connect a mobile phone with a suitable cradle in the SL and mute the radio during a call, the APS 30 unfortunately does not have Bluetooth for a mobile hands-free system or for streaming music, so other sources are not available.
And a few more details
The Final Edition uses automatic climate control (an optional extra available for an additional charge outside of the Final Edition) with a dust filter and the appreciated residual heat utilization, as well as a very helpful and well-functioning rain sensor for the automatic interval control of the windshield wipers.
Another included extra for the interior of the Final Edition that is indispensable for many is the electrically adjustable driver and front passenger seat – a great toy for the kids. This feature is actually very helpful if drivers or passengers frequently change, or if passengers are carried in the back seat. This allows you to use the triple memory function, which is standard in the Final Edition and also includes the steering column (if configured) and the exterior mirrors.
In addition—and this is a truly great feel-good factor—the Final Edition comes with heated seats as standard, so winter driving is absolutely welcome!
Another practical little feature is the luggage net in the passenger footwell, where small items such as a parking disc can be easily stowed. Overall, the Final Edition's interior also features a number of attractive extras that are optional (and expensive) in the standard version, resulting in a very attractive overall package. In summary, the engineers and designers have succeeded in differentiating the special model with the Final Edition's interior, elevating the elegant luxury of an SL to the highest possible level without appearing gimmicky or overdone.
