Shape & Freedom – the 1965 Pagoda
At just 24 years of age, the Frenchman Paul Bracq joined the Mercedes-Benz design department in 1957, where he defined a line of refined, modern elegance. In the mid-1960s, Bracq applied this signature style to a new hardtop coupé, the 230 SL. With its well-balanced proportions and distinctive pagoda roof, the design appears “ethereal, understated – yet sporty”, as renowned Italian automotive historian Paolo Tumminelli writes in his history of European car design. The Pagoda also offers noticeably more usable space than its rounder predecessor, the 190 SL. And thanks to its hardtop, the owner enjoys the two most exciting automotive forms in one: a coupé and a convertible.
The Pagoda offered here is a relatively early example, first registered in April 1965. It was ordered with the optional four-speed automatic gearbox. The car has remained in the same family for over 45 years. Eight years ago, more than 40,000 Swiss francs were invested in the vehicle at an official Mercedes-Benz branch, including extensive work on the axles, cooling system, ignition and brakes. It still retains its original leather interior. Only two years ago, the Pagoda passed its most recent veteran MOT inspection and today presents itself in good overall condition.
