The Story of the Glas Cabriolet – A Legend on Wheels

Hans Glas was more than a car maker – he was a visionary. In the 1950s and ’60s, Glas from Dingolfing made automotive history. With the charming Goggomobil, they gave mobility to a generation and became an icon of post-war prosperity. But Hans Glas wanted more: more style, more sportiness, more emotion.

Together with famed Italian designer Pietro Frua, he took the leap into the luxury class. The result: the unmistakable Glas GT Coupés and Cabriolets – breathtakingly elegant cars with sculpted bodies and a spirited four‑cylinder heart. Available in 1300 and 1700 versions, they expressed German‑Italian engineering flair.

The craftsmanship came at a cost. These meticulously built cars were not profitable, and in 1966 Glas was absorbed by BMW. A silent farewell – yet one that fueled the legend. To this day, the halls in Dingolfing where modern BMWs are built still whisper the spirit of this bold pioneer.

A “Bella Macchina” to Make Hearts Race

The top-of-the-line Glas GT 1700 Cabriolet is more than just a car. It’s an experience, a piece of art – a time capsule on wheels overflowing with emotion. Its punchy 100‑hp engine perfectly matches the low 1,200 kg curb weight – pure driving thrill. The gearbox shifts silkily, the brakes bite precisely, and the near-mint soft top completes the picture.

A true highlight is the cockpit: stylish, functional, beautifully proportioned. Today it’s considered one of the most beautiful dashboards in automotive history – a designer masterpiece with chrome-ringed VDO gauges, ahead of its time in readability and operation, a reference point for generations. The well‑arranged instruments, set in premium materials, blend aesthetics and precision – a place where technology and emotion meet.

Wherever this Cabriolet goes, it turns heads and draws admiration. A genuine charmer on wheels – elegant, irresistible, imbued with flair.

The mix of Italian design, German engineering and rare exclusivity makes this car an icon whose appeal has never faded. Timeless, fascinating, desirable. Addictive? Maybe. Passionate? Certainly.

This Rare Gem: The GLAS 1700 GT Cabriolet

This particular car is one of the rarest and most compelling of its kind: only 122 units were ever built, and this one survives in this condition. Its history is fully documented, original registration papers included. After an eventful early life, it was decommissioned in the late 1970s and eventually rediscovered by a Glas enthusiast and BMW dealer in southern Germany.

What followed was a decade‑long, no‑compromise full restoration – technical and visual perfection with obsessive attention to detail. Every step supported by bills and comprehensive photo documentation. Thoughtful upgrades include conversion to 12 volt and sports seats with removable headrests.

In 2022, a respected Hamburg lawyer acquired this automotive treasure, and now, with great regret for health reasons, he is reluctantly passing it on.

A Glas Cabriolet in this condition is extremely rare – even among our classic‑specialist house, we’ve never stored a comparably perfect example. The car comes with full German registration and official historic (H‑plate) status.

Summary

This GLAS 1700 GT Cabriolet is a real charmer on wheels – stylish, irresistible, full of character. Wherever it appears, it captures hearts. A convertible of exceptional rarity – and a classic whose allure never fades. In short: a stunning icon for lovers of German‑Italian driving culture.

Pure driving pleasure: the thrilling engine, timeless elegant design and sublime comfort fuse into an intoxicating experience – even after 60 years, its magic remains undiminished.

A true Bella Macchina — crowned with one of the most beautiful instrument panels in automotive history.
