The Daimler SP250 'Dart' is one of the most characterful and distinctive British sportscars of the 1960s and this beautifully presented example comes with an exceptional history within the SP250 community. Our vendor is a passionate SP250 enthusiast, owning two examples which sit side by side in his garage, and has been heavily involved in the owners' club scene for many years. He is particularly well known amongst SP250 circles, making this a car that has been cherished by someone who truly understands the model.
According to its JDHT Certificate, this SP250 was manufactured on 19th March 1963 and supplied new to Stratstone of Egham, Surrey. The car was acquired by Mr Brian Hills in January 1995, after which he embarked upon a comprehensive body-off restoration, with extensive photographic documentation. Finished in beautiful British Racing Green with a matching dark green interior, the car was also extensively upgraded to improve both performance and usability.
The 2.5 litre V8 engine was rebuilt with Concorde cams, a lightened flywheel and carefully ported cylinder heads, while the gearbox gained overdrive. Other upgrades include rack-and-pinion steering, a brake servo, electronic ignition, electronic fuel pump, Kenlowe cooling fan, telescopic dampers and extensively upgraded stainless-steel cooling pipework. A wood-veneered dashboard with additional switches completes the purposeful yet sympathetic presentation.
5390 PJ has subsequently enjoyed numerous tours with the SP250 Owners' Club and has featured in several magazine articles, including Driving Member, Jaguar Heritage Magazine and Brian Long's book Daimler X8 SP250. It also appeared regularly as car number one at the Leukaemia and Lymphoma classic car event at Tredegar House.
More recently, approximately £10,000 was spent during 2022-2023 with Jason Wright Vintage Motor Car Engineering, including brake and suspension refurbishment, four new Pirelli Cinturato tyres and further mechanical and electrical work. The carburettors were rebuilt by Llandow Tuning and set up on a rolling road by InterPro. Accompanied by a leather hood bag and full tonneau cover, this is a wonderfully sorted and extensively documented SP250, offered by an owner who has undoubtedly given it the very best of homes.
