The T2's successor, the T3, was introduced in 1979. With its significantly wider and more angular body, the rear-wheel drive concept of its predecessors was retained, and the two air-cooled engine options were initially adopted. The chassis was redesigned, and the interior was modified. The "Syncro" model, introduced in late 1984, marked the first time a Transporter with (permanent) all-wheel drive was available. With the exception of these "Syncro" models, which were built by Steyr Daimler Puch in Graz, Austria, on behalf of VW, all T3s were produced at VW's Hanover plant.

For cost reasons, Volkswagen continued to use longitudinally mounted rear engines in the third generation of the Transporter. The T3 was significantly larger; the wheelbase and overall length were increased by approximately 60 mm. A water-cooled diesel engine was available from early 1981; in the autumn of 1982, the petrol engines were also converted to water cooling. In the 1980s, the range was expanded with a turbodiesel engine, fuel-injected gasoline engines, and exclusively equipped models such as the Caravelle Carat. Finally, the Multivan was offered in the German market as a special edition with enhanced options, namely the Whitestar (white) and the Bluestar (light blue metallic). In October 1990, the rear-wheel drive models were replaced by the front-engine, front-wheel drive VW T4.

Until the autumn of 1992, the entire Syncro bus range continued to be produced by Steyr Daimler Puch AG in Austria, along with a small number of government vehicles (produced alongside the T4) without all-wheel drive. To mark the final discontinuation of the T3, VW released a final special edition of the Multivan, the "Limited Last Edition" (LLE), limited to 2,500 units. A smaller number of the Redstar (red) and Bluestar (now in dark blue metallic) special editions were also available, but these were only offered to VW employees.

The van presented here is a very original Syncro, with only the rims replaced. It also has a low mileage, only 187,000 km, which is relatively low for a Volkswagen van. Inside, it looks like a brand new van, as the seats and the entire interior look new. Everything works, and this Syncro is waiting for its new owner. A fantastic opportunity for the true 4x4 owner.
