Description

History of the Triumph GT6

When Triumph unveiled the GT6 at the 1966 London Motor Show, the concept was as clear as it was compelling: to combine the elegant coupé body designed by Giovanni Michelotti with a compact inline six-cylinder engine.

Michelotti’s signature – the long bonnet, flowing roofline and harmoniously proportioned fastback rear – gave the GT6 a presence far beyond its vehicle class. Its silhouette inevitably evoked comparison with significantly more expensive Gran Turismo models of the era.

Not without a certain wink, the GT6 soon acquired the nickname “Poor Man’s E-Type.”

A comparison that acknowledged the aesthetic proximity – yet never fully did justice to the independent character of the GT6.

Today, the GT6 Mk1 is regarded as the purest and most formally coherent version of the series. Its restrained lines and mechanical directness make it the ideal foundation for a contemporary and technically plausible evolution.

Provenance of the Offered Vehicle

The vehicle presented here is a 1969 Triumph GT6 Mk1 currently undergoing a comprehensive structural rebuild in our manufactory.

The objective is not the reconstruction of factory specification, but the precise and technically substantiated reinterpretation of a British six-cylinder coupé – as Triumph itself might have executed it in the late 1960s with an expanded development budget.

The technical configuration is fully defined.

Individualisation is intentionally focused on aesthetic execution.

Technical Concept

At the heart of the project lies a newly built 2.5-litre Triumph inline six-cylinder engine of British origin.

Specification includes:

• Flow-optimised cylinder head
• Enlarged valves
• Specially calibrated fast-road torque camshaft
• Precisely balanced rotating assembly
• Optimised compression ratio for road-oriented performance

Target output: approximately 170 hp, with particular emphasis on strong and confident mid-range torque delivery.

Induction

• Three Weber 40 DCOE twin carburettors
• Open aluminium intake trumpets with fine stainless-steel mesh
• Alternatively available with sport air filters
• Period-correct mechanical throttle linkage

Exhaust System

• Tubular exhaust manifold
• Handcrafted exhaust system with centrally exiting dual pipes

The acoustic character remains metallic, present, and authentic.

Transmission

• Precisely geared 5-speed transmission
• Custom-matched driveshaft
• Sport-calibrated clutch

Integration has been executed without visible stylistic compromise inside the interior.

Rear Axle

• 3.63:1 final drive ratio
• Limited-slip differential for improved traction
• Conversion to constant-velocity driveshafts for increased durability

These measures serve not only performance enhancement, but above all sustainable mechanical resilience.

Suspension

• Newly defined suspension geometry
• Revised damper and spring rates
• Moderate lowering
• Reinforced bushings and guiding components

Braking System

• Performance-optimised disc brakes front and rear
• Multi-piston brake calipers at the front
• Dual-circuit braking system with adjustable brake bias

Electrical System

The factory-original, historically fragile electrical system is being completely renewed.

All wiring looms, connectors, and grounding points are modernised while preserving the classic visual appearance of the engine bay.

The objective is reliable, contemporary operational safety combined with uncompromised historic authenticity.

Wheels

• 16-inch lightweight alloy wheels
• 215/45 high-performance tyres

The wheel and tyre configuration forms an integral part of the overall dynamic concept and has been carefully considered in conjunction with the newly defined suspension geometry.

Individualisation

While the technical specification is binding, the future owner is invited to define the following elements:

• Exterior paint colour
• Leather quality and colour concept
• Seat configuration
• Fabric and interior material selection
• Ergonomic adjustment of seat position, steering wheel, and pedal box to suit the future owner’s physique

Completion of the vehicle is expected approximately nine months after mutually agreed order confirmation.

The complete rebuild will be comprehensively documented in an individual restoration book.

Summary

This GT6 Restomod represents a technically substantiated and internally coherent evolution of a British classic – with clearly defined performance objectives, modern precision, and mechanical integrity.

The term “Poor Man’s E-Type” undoubtedly belongs to this model’s history.
In its present configuration, however, it reads less like a description – and more like British humour delivered with remarkable self-irony.

With approximately 170 horsepower, a five-speed transmission and a comprehensively re-engineered chassis, this GT6 does not stand in the shadow of comparison – it steps beyond it. What remains is an independent and serious six-cylinder sports car. One executed with the technical consistency its design always deserved. The lines of an Italian Gran Turismo.
The heart of a British inline six. And now, the performance this silhouette always merited.

Born for the road.
For Alpine passes.
For the joy of driving.
Not merely for display behind glass.

The Scuderia Group – A Manufactory for Classic Sports Car Reinterpretations

Based in Kirchen/Sieg and Dortmund – the former Alfa Classic Center – the Scuderia Group combines craftsmanship, technical expertise, and more than four decades of experience working with automotive icons of the 1960s and 1970s.

With a team of twelve highly qualified specialists – body craftsmen, engine builders, technicians, upholsterers and automotive engineers – we do not create simple conversions, but cohesive and fully developed automotive concepts. Our team is complemented by an international network of specialised suppliers and manufacturing partners, each recognised as leaders within their respective disciplines.

Our Approach

We do not regard restomod as modernisation –

but as the refinement of an existing vision, undertaken with respect for the original designer’s intent.

The lines remain untouched.

The proportions remain intact.

The character is sharpened.

Mechanics, precision and reliability are perfected.

The driving experience is carefully enhanced with contemporary functionality –

without altering its original spirit.

Experience & References

In recent years, the Group has realised several restomod projects focusing on sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s, based, among others, on vehicles from:

·       Alfa Romeo

·       BMW

·       Jaguar

Each project follows a clearly defined technical concept – free from fashionable effects and short-lived trends.

Philosophy

We have the privilege of bringing automotive childhood dreams to life.

And we take that responsibility seriously.

A vehicle leaving our manufactory is not a mere modernisation,

but the consistent evolution of an idea –

built as it might have been, without compromise.

For us, restomod is not a trend.

It is precise engineering, experience and technical integrity.

In the end, they are toys.

Large toys.

Once they were called Matchbox and drove across the living-room carpet.

Today, we have the privilege of building them as we always wished they could be.
